    Hi

Does anyone know of any Post-doc programmes available through DL? Most of what I have read and seen through friends is limited to universities in the traditional format. I would really like to know if there is anything out there in this area.

Post docs are regarded more as positions taken for individuals looking for teaching careers, the idea is to build your resume with publications so you can land a tenure track job. Post docs are normally negotiated with faculty members.

A post doc could be DL if you negotiate to conduct research at a different location than yours with a prof at a University. I think it is possible but you would need to contact a prof. and negotiate this on a one to one basis.

On a different note, I think that post docs could make up for the lack of a prestigious doctorate. I have seen many profs here in Canada with PhDs from non prestigious schools teaching at prestigious universities because their post docs at prestigious places.

So what if a Touro or NCU PhD graduate does a post doc with Stanford University? Is he going to get a diploma from Stanford that will allow him to teach at an AACSB accredited business school?

    Hi Brad,

    What's your field of interest?

Not sure if you have this in mind, but I recall some S. African schools offering post-doc degrees in Theology.

In theory yes. However, what are the chances to get admitted into a post-doc to Stanford or Harvard with a PhD from NCU? Not impossible but really hard whe you are competing with thousands of applicants from better universities.

Mine is Church History. Do you know which universities in RSA offer this? I have been looking at Université d'Ottawa and McGill University, but thought I would look around and see if there was another method.

    Thanks

Brad, I think your field of specialization lends itself pretty well to DL even at the postdoc level. If I were in your position I would try to seek post doctoral experience not only at universities but also at research centers or prestigious NGO`s or a specific Church denomination “headquarters” and the like. Here in Holland, just as an example, Philips (but also many other private organizations) offers extraordinary postdoc positions for engineers and scientists so I am sure other think thanks around the world do it too. In this era of communications, you should be able to cooperate with them somehow and be able to add professional research experience to your CV. I guess you will have to invest a great deal of time to find a think tank where your area of study fits, but I am positive there must be something somewhere that you could do. I’ll keep my eyes open if I see something at this side of the pond. Good luck!

Thank you. I have been in touch with McGill University and they are quite positive about the subject field. I know the head of Catholic Studies there, which is up the street from where I am currently in Montréal and he doesn't see much problem with my request nor the time I would spend at the university. It would fit in well with what I am currrently studying.

    Thanks

I think at one time Greenwich School of Theology offered a D.Phil. as a post-doc degree. But apparently they no longer offer this degree.

I did a search at Univ. of S. Africa and found quite a few hits for post-doc degrees.

Then I remembered an email I received from my advisor at Univ. of Pretoria. I had asked about the school's D.D. degree (usually honorary in the U.S.). The advisor wrote:

"The Doctor of Divinity degree is a full research degree peculiar to Pretoria. It is designed mainly for candidates of the Dutch Reformed churches who proceed along a broader front of study. It requires a full research thesis plus doctoral exams in another two theological subjects.

"The Department of Education in South Africa is busy reformatting the entire SA educational system. This will come into full effect within a few years. Then there will only be one doctoral degree awarded - the PhD. All others will be reconfigured to fit this model."
