    Hello,

If I would enroll in either Excelsior or Charter Oak; Would it be possible to do courses at several DL universities (that are cheaper for certain courses) and then easily use those credits for your degree? Does taking a course at a DL university cost only the course or do they also charge some sort of extra registration fee? If so, how much would that normally be? Lastly, if I'm enrolled at Excelsior, and do for example many courses in say military history, can I then get a BA in military history from excelsior?

    Thank you in advance :)

Taking courses through an RA DL program (such as BYU or LSU) and then transferring them to Excelsior College is a common strategy among Excelsior students.

Some schools do charge a registration or service fee in addition to DL tuition but most I've experienced do not. It's possible to take a 3 semester hour course for less than $300.

In many cases, you need to examine the costs associated with testing. Most DL programs will let you test at a local testing center but those centers also charge fees. I've paid as little as nothing and as much as $75 for an exam proctor.

Aside from being cheaper in many cases, one advantage of DL through several colleges is that the available course selection is usually higher than if you resricted yourself to one university.

Excelsior doesn't off a major in "military history" -- you could do a history major or a Liberal Studies major and achieve a military history background.

An Excelsior bachelor's degree is 120 semester hours more or less. The history major would be only about 25% of that. It's that other 75% (90 hours) that provides most people a greater challenge. Afterall, most people have little trouble with their major study area -- it's the core and cognate areas that challenge most of us. Using DL courses from several schools and testing options lets you select options that meet your own needs with less stress and challenge.

Excelsior does not charge an extra fee for receiving transcripts from colleges you attend. You simply pay your annual fee and have transcripts sent.

You can do this at Charter Oak too, and TESC as well, I expect. I took courses through Keiser College and Charter Oak itself at the same time when I was finishing my BS.

Charter Oak will allow you to design a "Military History" concentration. It's a concentration, not a major, but many, including me, find no meaningful difference.

    Good luck,

Here's a RA DL school that offers classes to out-of-state students at the remarkable rate of $35 per credit. That means a 3-credit course will cost you just $105 in tuition.

That's for the summer term. They are upping the tuition to $40 per credit in the fall, so that same 3-credit course will cost you a total of $120.

Take classes there and at other DL schools (consider DL options at community colleges located in your state for a very good price on tuition) and then xfer those credits to Excelsior.

I'm currently finishing an Associate degree I started 25 years ago at a local college at a cost of $66 per credit. I'll do some CLEP tests and take some classes as necessary. Once I have my AA, I'll most likely xfer to Excelsior to attain my Bachelor's.
