If you're looking for a DL opportunity at a RA school (accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools) you may want to check into San Juan College located in New Mexico. The current tuition is $35 per credit for out-of-state students, but that will increase by a whopping $5 per credit in the fall.

If you're lucky enough to live in New Mexico, you'll pay just $25 per credit. Does it get any cheaper than that for DL credits from a RA school?

    Good to know!

I think the independent study courses from LSU are slightly cheaper, but not much. This is a real find, thanks!

LSU: $229 for 3 credit course
SJC: $120 for 3 credit couse

    Saving of $109 per course

While LSU is cheap, they're not as cheap :)

Yes, so it would seem! That makes SJC courses even cheaper than Excelsior or TECEP exams. Not as cheap as CLEP or DANTES, but amazingly close considering they're actual courses.

Their selection seems limited, but maybe that's just because it's summer. I'll be interested to see what they offer online in the fall.

Adella (my wife) might make some good use of this since she's swung back to doing an American Bachelor's and JD rather than do a foreign LLB then an American LLM.

I like San Juan's IT certificate courses, but they don't offer online. If they do, I can use my MGIB to bank some money......:)

    Proctors?

I believe this school has been mentioned before on here. I have a question if anyone can answer it, do these guys require a test proctor? I seem to think that I read before that they do on the website , but I can't seem to see find it now. Thanks guys!

Their fall schedule lists some core liberal arts courses that could be useful to many people.

Freshman Comp., Advanced Comp., Western Civ., Intro Psych., Soc. Marriage and Fam., Interpersonal Comm....

Would make a nice, inexpensive place for a full time load of lower level gen ed courses.

After checking into many of the colleges in New Mexico that offer online/distance classes, I've arrived at the following conclusion: Non-resident tuition fees dramatically increase if one enrolls for more than 6 semester hours.

For example, at Clovis Community College, the fall 2006 tuition for 6 semester hours costs $206, minus the technology fee. Yet, should one enroll in classes totaling 7 semester hours, then the fee jumps to $440, sans technology fee.

On the other hand, 18 semester hours at Clovis = $740. Add the technology fee ($740+$36=$776), and each credit hour comes in at $43.12 per semester hour. Compared to many local schools offering lower-level, undergrad classes, this is still a great deal.

However, if a student wanted to enroll in just 12+ semester hours, New Mexico Junior College might represent a better deal. The college web site lists non-resident tuition at $528 for 12 or more semester hours. The college also has a web page describing "courses that do not require a physical appearance on campus".

Other interesting observations regarding New Mexico colleges/universities:

Apparently, Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell charges non-residents the "out-of district, resident" tuition rate if taking fewer than six semester hours during a summer session. See this link, and scroll to the bottom. According to the online schedule, ENMU-Roswell only offers lower-level, undergrad classes online.

Eastern New Mexico University-Portales charges Texas residents instate tuition rates if residing within 135 miles of the campus. A few upper-level, undergrad courses are offered via distance.

Eastern New Mexico-Ruidoso states on its tuition page that Texas residents are charged $32 per semester hour. It is unknown if the 135-mile policy would apply in the same sense as ENMU-Portales. Might be worth a look, as a few upper-level, undergrad distance classes are also offered.

Western New Mexico University tuition for six semester hours are the same for residents and non-residents - $570 undergrad/$606 graduate, not including other fees. After six semester hours, the fees increase dramatically for non-residents. WMNU has a virtual campus as well, and could possibly be a source for a few upper-level undergrad or grad hours.

I found the distance learning home page, but I don't see any courses listed. Am I missing something?

    Clovis

I have looked into Clovis before. The only thing with them that hasn't been mentioned is that they charge an extra $50 per class for their distance classes. This still makes them very, very reasonable though. I think that turns out to be like $170 per 3cr. class or something.

I am going to enroll in the summer term there, and I'll report back my experiences. I'm taking the Western Civilizations class. I'll post back my experience there.
