    Hello everyone,

For some time, I've been wondering when the City University of New York would approve an online degree.
Well, I found out that as of today CUNY has finally jumped the online bandwagon and is now offering its first degree program.

The tuition is the same for residents, out of state, and international students.

    Here is the link:http://www.cuny.edu/

    Kind regards,

    Maria

    Greetings,

    1) Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post the information about CUNY's new distance degree program.

For those that might be interested:
    Online Degree:
Degree type: Worthless ("... Baccalaureate ... liberal arts education with a concentration in Communication and Culture. This degree will provide students with the basis for understanding the complexities of human interaction in the modern world." [What utter poop!]

    "Web Based Courses":

    2) I just don't understand. One of the few advantages of distance learning is that one may choose one's institution from all the world has to offer. Why, then, would anyone choose to entangle themselves with NYC's dreary socialist college system? For what I'm sure CUNY will charge, surely even the necessity of the occasional trip to North Korea ("Airfare to North Korea: Indeterminate. Airfare away from North Korea: Priceless") for test and such would not make study with "Kim Il Sung University" more expensive, and I'm sure it has a better reputation.

    3) Just for giggles, I went looking at CUNY's job postings. I noticed that they value a "Human Resources Department" droid[1] and a combined Physics/Astronomy "Assistant Professor"[2] as being worth exactly the same ($35,031 - $61,111). SURELY THERE IS SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG WITH THE WORLD!!!

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek

P.S. Interesting name. You're not related to the ********s of Oklahoma, are you?

    More grumpiness

In CUNY's description of their program, I really wish they wouldn't use "innovative". In fact, I think I'm ready to see a worldwide five year moratorium on the use of that word. As Margaret Thatcher observed, "Power is like being a lady... if you have to tell people you are, you aren't." I would add innovative to her list.

P.S. Isn't it ironic that "think outside the box" has become such a cliche?

    Hi all,

The CUNY post was intended to inform some (if interested) of another alternative.

BTW, CUNY has other programs waiting to be implemented soon.

I find Mr. Kanarek's attacks on CUNY baseless, especially with regard to Assistant Professor salaries. Bronx Community College (part of CUNY) is rated at the top as far as pay is concerned for a public community college. The low compensation professors receive is endemic of not just CUNY but the rest of country as well.

I'll leave it at that for I refuse to spar.

I'm not a senior member of this board but I can't help but comment on the level of cynicism over things that are so insignificant. Is that "thinking out of the box" I think not.

BTW, I'm not related to ********'s of Oklahoma. I'm sure they're fine people. The ***********s was by accident and happened the first time I joined degreeinfo. I found it insignificant and so left it at that.

    Peace,
    Maria

Maria! To hell with you!. How dare you contribute to this forum!... You are petty and not worthy of senior member status. No di decoder ring for you.

I didn't mean to suggest that I agreed with Mr. Kanarek that the program is, as he called it, utter poop. In fact it sounds interesting to me, and I expect it will be the right program for many people.

My snarkiness was just from having seen the word "innovative" used more and more in less and less innovative ways, but I didn't mean for people to that that particularly seriously. :)

Mr. Kanarek has a peculiar, sharp sense of humor, but I am positive no harm was intended, Maria. I though his message was more a critic towards CUNY, a university system, I infer, he knows well. ;) In fact, I think his critic was justified. What does this new degree offer to the DL community that we don´t have already?

    Hi Steve,

My comments were directed more at Mr. Karanek.
I'm also aware that CUNY had just started is hardly "innovative." It is for that very reason that I made the post. CUNY has been behind the 8 ball with regard to online programs but a certain degree of puffery is allowed.
That said, there are learners out there (such as myself) who may no longer be as interested in earning a degree in the so called more marketable areas such as business, computer science, or engineering.

Steve, I'm not upset with you or anyone, its behind.

Raristud, thanks for the vote of confidence

    Kind Regards,

    Maria:D

Good for you - quite a few people have a despearate need to get the "last word in" which on the internet can go on for years ;)

Please do not be intimidated by the label "senior member" - as far as I know it relates to either:

    1. number of posts - regardless of quality or,
    2. Period of membership - regardless of contributions.

Quality contributions are always welcomed. The information here is a result of many people's contributions.

I think it's exclusively the former. If you've posted a hundred times, however uselessly, you're a Senior Member. :)

You are correct. 100 is the magic number. Hey, another useless post from me. ;)

Perhaps we can add "super senior member", "super-dooper senior member", etc.
