    Hello everyone,

Its been a while since I've posted, but I would like someone's honest opinion. Right now, I'm in an MBA program with a focus on Marketing as I've worked in sales in the real estate industry for the past 4 years. I'm really trying to get out of jobs that pay on 100% commission. I realize that I like the real estate industry and have been looking into a master of science in real estate program. My goal is to get into commercial real estate possibly.

I have completed 12 hours so far in my current program however my local state university offers the real estate program I now have an interest in. My problem is the real estate degree is not offered online and I prefer this option. I have not been able to find any online schools that offer real estate classes. So I'm thinking about completing my current MBA program and then enrolling in the MSRE program. Would this be over doing it??

I also have a interest in commercial real estate and asked a similar question to one of my professors, who is on the board of directors for the American Real Estate Society and is an editor for the Journal of Real Estate Research.

His advice since I already had an MBA was to get a real estate license or get an MAI certification "If it doesn't mess up your life that much" (his quote).

So I would say stick with the MBA and supplement that with the real estate licence and Appraisal Institute courses.

You might also want to look into getting a GIS certificate. There are many DL programs in that area.

No, two business-related master's degrees isn't overdoing it.

    Hi endowave,

I'm not familiar with the MAI or GIS certificate. I may consider the CCIM, but its expensive!! Which area are you interested in? Had any luck getting jobs? I have tried getting analyst positions, but no luck.

    Re: Re: MBA or MSRE

Of course, that one dude on here with two MBA degrees is, by his own admission, an educated derelict.

The MAI is the certification needed to do real estate appraisals, including commercial. (At least in Florida that seems to be the law.) GIS is Geographic Information Systems, and is not a specific certification by itself, although there are a few certificate programs out there. A basic knowledge of GIS would be very beneficial to anyone wanting to work in real estate.

As for jobs, I'm currently finishing up my PhD (or at least get to ABD status), so I haven't really started looking. Eventually, I would like to work in commercial appraising or retail estate marketing analysis.
