Based on much research and thanks to the very helpful input that I have received from this forum, I've decided that I will pursue my MBA with Durham university. They have a distance option which is partially taught and the programme is also done in Barbados which is excellent for me as that is where I live.

But here's the thing- I've noticed that Heriot-Watt recommends 200 study hours per module for their MBA programme, but I haven't seen any such recommendation for Durham. Does anyone know what's the recommended study hours per module for Durham? I'm assuming that it's less than 200 hours per module as they require more modules than HW for their MBA, but yet the 2 programmes can be done in a comparable time.

Any guidance in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    H,

I am currently working on the first DL MBA module at Henley in the UK; Foundations of Management. You are told to allow 80 hours for it but that is a definite under-estimation if you want to cover the material thoroughly. That figure is not including the three-day residential we had at the start of the module but does include the assessed assignment.

The modules get progressively tougher and more involved, culminating in the dissertation at year three which they say should take 200 hours which again I think is conservative.

The general rule of thumb with a DL MBA is to allow 10-15 hours study time per week. As an average this may be close but in reality you do far more close to assignment deadlines or exams. (As I am now, hence writing this at 01:00, this is a break for me!).

The trick is to find a study pattern that suits you and one where you can do justice to the reading material and comprehension of the subject matter. It's a constant juggling act between work, leisure and family but everyone on the course is doing the same and your cohort will provide support.

    Take it easy,

    Dave C.

...then, the time you'll need to invest into a course will also depend on your study skills; there are some good books available from Amazon on this topic.

Thanks Dave C. All the best with your programme- looks tough. Thanks as well Dennis- I would definitely need to allocate that additional time as well.

    Hello hsobers,
I'm very seriously considering starting my DL-MBA at Durham University in July 2006. Who knows, perhaps our study paths will cross? :) Chris
