HELLO I AM NEW TO DL. I AM LOOKING TO GET A BS. IN COMPUTER INFORMATION SCIENCE FOR COMPUTER PROGRAMMING. I LOOKED AT UOP AND NOW I AM LOOKING AT FMU. I NEED A SCHOOL WITH FINANCIAL HELP AND MAYBE A PELL GRANT.ANY SUGGESTIONS OR INFO ON FMU? THANKS
FMU and UoP are expensive. UoP is regionally accreditied and FMU is nationally accreditied. Regional is a "higher" rating with regard to transferability. You can look here - http://www.worldwidelearn.com/online-bachelor/index.html for more options. Also, http://online.fsu.edu/student/degree/
I've heard enough unpleasant stories about FMU to have eliminated them from consideration very early in the process. Here's one article: http://www.orlandoweekly.com/features/story.asp?id=526 Of note: Interestingly, FMU alumni can't teach at FMU, since the school requires its teachers to have attended regionally accredited schools.
I have been interviewing people for a few positions in Florida and many have FMU degrees. I have no problem hiring them if they are otherwise qualified.
WORK AT FAST PACE THANKS FOR THE GREAT INFO. I GUESS I AM LOOKING FOR A PROGRAM THAN I CAN WORK AT MY OWN PACE. A FAST ONE IF I WONT TO FINISH FASTER IF IT IS POSSIBLE.YOU ALL HAVE TALKED ME OUT OF FMU AND THANKS. I NEED A REGIONALLY ACCREDITED SCHOOL.I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH BUT I NEED A LITTLE HELP.MAYBE I COULD JUST GET A AS. DEGREE FIRST. I THINK I WANT A BS FROM UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA,BUT THEY DONT OFFER AS, DEGREE ONLINE JUST BS.THANKS
Re: WORK AT FAST PACE If you want a BS from the University of West Alabama, then I suggest you attend the University of West Alabama and get a BS from there rather than messing around with other schools. If you have a local community college, and you can ensure that UWA will accept all its credits, you could get an Associate's from the community college, then transfer to UWA. Also, and I mean this in a friendly way, I urge you to type without using ALL CAPS. It's not more effort to write properly, and it looks much more professional. Good luck, -=Steve=-
Sorry for caps.My local community college does have only a few night classes not as many as i need.I have to work full time right now and i cannot work at night.I need a dl program.I am real serious about this degree but not sure where to start.
Re: Re: WORK AT FAST PACE Aside from what Steve wrote, it makes your posts easier to read. One thing that always boggles my mind is why Department of Defense (DoD) safety of use messages are always written in ALL CAPS. Do the people writing these messages think others are going to pay extra special attention to these messages because they are in ALL CAPS? I personally find them harder to read, so I am more than likely to miss something that could be important.
Perhaps University of Maryland University College could help? They have a major in Computer Science and you can study online. They're regionally accredited, so I expect UWA would take their credits should you decide to transfer. I'd start there. -=Steve=-
There is a lot of information here on Capella, use the search function. I expect you can get the same education for less than you'd pay any of the for-profit schools like that, though. -=Steve=-
You should take a look at: Troy University, $163/semester hour. Bellevue University, $280/semester hour. Western Govenors University, $235/semester hour (approx.) Touro University International, $250/semester hour
i have looked at these colleges and they are ok. is it possible a pell grant would cover all the costs? not sure how it works. i have applied for a pell grant thanks
errr.. where do you get the western governors numbers? Should they be more like around $190 per semester hour.
I wanted to add that whilst touro is $250 a credit hour they also include your books so that means it is cheaper still.
I looked at Western Governors University (WGU), the nation's only totally online, competency-based college it sounds good but, what if i dont know alot or anything about computer programming?I am looking for a college that is 100 percent online and i can work at a fast pace. Not one that has a set time to start and finish. this school still sounds good and i should get a call tomorrow from counselors. cant wait!
Western Governors is from the ground up. It will take you a bit longer if you know nothing, but competency based means you can work at your own pace. The downside to a slow pace is you pay for more semesters. The upside is you can move quickly through stuff that you do know. Western Governors does not have a strong programming program however. Their degrees are IT degrees which are different then CS degrees cause they focus more on network admin, databases, hardware etc. They do have a software cert, but it is mostly java, sun, server type programming (I think). You might look at Troy, but I am gonna have to defer to Joannes knowledge there (she is our resident expert on CS, CIS stuff) I really don't have any idea what troy has got. It is not a CS degree, and it isn't really a CIS degree. They call it a Applied CS degree. They still have things like operating systems, and discrete math, but no architecture, compiler theory etc. A bit perplexed by it myself.
thanks for great info.I am leaning strongly toward Capella. If I can afford them.I did apply at Fmu and got a free ride so to speak 24 credits paid for by pell grants. Before I researched this board and found out they were NA.I would perfer a well known name but I guess its the education I am after not the college name.
