Can anyone give me some help on how to best pick a dissertation chair? It has snuck up a bit on me (not too much, I assure you), but still...any help would be appreciated.

    1. Find someone whose interests fit most closely with your own.
    2. Find someone who will allow you to pursue a dissertation topic of your choice rather than forcing a dissertation topic on you against your will.
    3. Find an advisor who will actually advise you when you need advice.
    4. Ask for contact info on a few of his/her former doctoral students (and, by the way, have him/her include a few of his/her old doctoral washouts as well as doctoral graduates).
