Does anyone have any opinions about research based Ph. D. programs at the "tier one," government universities in India? Would a Ph. D. from such an institution be considered equivalent to a Ph. D. from a univeristy in England, So. Africa or Australia? A Ph. D. from a "tier one" school in India appears to cost less than US$2,000.00 for the entire program that lasts 4-6 years. Compared to Brtish, So. African and Australian programs, this appears to be a bargain. Any comments?
India has some wonderful schools; I at one point considered doing a research doctorate at Banares Hindu University, and India's English Language Institute will apparently soon be firing up a Ph.D. in literature that can be done by distance learning. My advice, as someone who does not know very much about the approval process for Indian universities: Ask Indians about the school (IRC #india isn't a bad place to start, but don't let it be your only resource). Track down a few of its alumni/ae and see where they're teaching. If the rest of the world thinks it's a legit school, it almost certainly is. Other than that, no caveats or reservations--except that I hope you'll keep us updated on your progress! Peace, ------------------ Tom Head www.tomhead.net
Having assessed Indian academics over the last few years for teaching positions here,I can state that the true 'tier 1' schools are recognised here by NOOSR as equal to Australian PhD degrees. I suggest however, that you check with AACROA, but be very certain as to the name of the University, and its location. Some interesting things happen and come out of India. One university efectively franchises out it name and there were over 400 'institutes and colleges' that prepared students for their degrees - and some of these were not much more than the local car repair shop. PhDs in Computer Science from top universities in India are considered equivalent to north american PhDs, you could do a gogle search and you will find several PhDs from India teaching at top universities in Canada and the US
When I was searching the ICDL directory a few months ago, I ran across some Christian schools in India that offer a gradaute theological education. This might be worth looking into (and the ICDL is probably the best starting point for folks considering Indian DL degrees anyway). As for Hindu theology, I found some fairly solid stuff there, too, usually classified as Vaishnava studies or as part of a philosophy program (Vedanta, or Hindu theology, is one of the six schools of Indian philosophy, and incorporates everything from dualism to nondualism to dual non-dualism (I'm not joking) to... Well, you get the idea). Peace, ------------------ Tom Head www.tomhead.net
