Looks like Northcentral U is serious about seeking ACBSP accreditation. The Chair of the business department at NCU has been in touch with the director of accreditation for ACBSP regarding information on getting accredited.

NCU is now a member of the ACBSP:

    Weird

When you click on the link, it states that NCU is not accredited.

It looks like they are a member school, but not accredited. I have no idea what that really means though....

The ACBSP accreditation process takes a few years to get(as any legitmate accrediting process does)

If NCU is seeking accreditation, they would have to be a member first. I am sure if you contact ACBSP they will let you know where NCU is in the process or if they have even started.

How serious is the ACBSP accreditation? I only noticed few accredited schools and many members at the caliber of the University of Phoenix and Devry so I wonder if this is a serious accreditation.

According to their site 293 accredited members.

I've seen it described as "junior" AACSB.

It certainly does! Good for them, if they become accredited it will definitely enhance the value of their business degrees.

I noticed 297 accredited universities, 60 members, and 45 candidates. Of those accredited, some decent universities are on the list. NCU is in fact a candidate while universities such as UofP and Devry are members.

I think this represents nothing but goodness. Putting your processes up for external review will help not only improve the educational experience at NCU but will give people more confidence in their programs. I think this is a wonderful step in the right direction.

ACBSP started out because some smaller schools could not obtain AACSB accreditation, due to cost and certain other restrictive requirements. These schools came together and formed the ACBSP. ACBSP has always been focused on the teaching of business in the programs and is nothing to sneeze at; when a school receives accreditation it does mean something. When the ACBSP committee comes in it is a serious matter and they are not as easy going as IACBE. Ironically AACSB has changed there accreditation requirements and due to these changes a lot of schools who are or were ACBSP accredited are becoming AACSB accredited or candidates(e.g. Morehead State(AACSB),Cal State DH(AACSB candidate, ACBSP accredited)).

I totally agree. The ACBSP is recognized by CHEA:

Unlike the AACSB which allows unaccredited schools to be educational members the ACBSP requires US schools to be regionally accredited:

    http://www.acbsp.org/index.php?mo=st&op=ld&sid=s1_027join&stpg=7

Unaccredited Pacific Western University (United States - California) is listed at the AACSB site:
    http://www.aacsb.edu/General/InstLists.asp?lid=1
    http://www.pwu-ca.edu/

I would rather have the University of Phoenix and DeVry as members then PWU! UoP and DeVry could easily become members of the AACSB if they wish to pay the fees.

Nice. I wonder if PWU is using this as a marketing ploy in the hopes that people will confuse being a member of AACSB with being accredited.

Listing yourself as a member only means you paid the membership fees. I would venture to say that most member universities would not list this as a selling point for their university. On the other hand, if the university was accredited or a candidate for accreditation, then this would be nice selling point. NCU is a candidate for ACBSP, but you don't see them advertising the fact (at least not at this time).

Sorry, but I still don't see value with this accreditation. Most of the accredited institutions are technical or community colleges with no names.

I have never seen jobs requiring this accreditation either. I don't see it can't hurt NCU but I wouldn't be running to register because of this either.

This is good, Carlosb. I would like to see Walden, Capella, and some of the other distance learning institutions do the same for their business programs. To be able to say that your business degree is professionally accredited by an organization that is recognized by CHEA is an asset.

However, I have some questions. How familiar are employers with ACBSP? From those who are, how many request ACBSP accredited degrees? And will employers that only take AACSB degrees would also consider graduates from an ACBSP school?

My question is how many employers even know what AACSB or ACBSP are? I doubt it's a large percentage, the value of AACSB and ACBSP approved degrees seems to lie heavily in academia (professorships, transfer credits, etc)

Several states allow AACSB or ACBSP degree holders slightly easier paths to CPA eligibility than vanilla RA.

Very true. We discussed this before here in detail. Most real-world employers have no clue or do not care about AACSB\ACBSP. In academia it does appear to be a big deal with many schools.

I have zero desire to work in academia in any way, shape or form. I love the real-world.

But ACBSP would be a nice plus for those that are interested in academia.

I have never seen this as a requirement for academic jobs. Most business related academic jobs require a PhD from an AACSB accredited school. ACBSP seems to be concentrated in community and technical colleges as I did not see many research universities that were accredited by this organization, so I really don't think it is of much use for academics looking to work at the University level.
