Can anyone recommend a legitimate portfolio or credential evaluating school or institution? I have earned a Master’s degree from an accredited college and a Juris Doctor (law) degree from an accredited law school. I also have worked in government for over 13 years, 9 of which were in a supervisory / management capacity. I would like to be awarded a Ph.D. in Public Policy from a “legitimate” school or institution that does a thorough evaluation, assessment and verification of prior learning and credentials to justify the awarding of the Ph.D. I have no problem with researching and writing a dissertation, but have no desire to take any more formal classes. Nine years of traditional academic classroom study is enough. I am not looking for accreditation, but rather legitimacy. By legitimacy I mean, if an applicant does not have to prove their credentials or can easily fake them and get the degree awarded because the school did not bother to verify the representations made by the applicant, I would consider the school or institution illegitimate.

    Any input would be appreciated.

I would seriously doubt that there are very many schools that would do portfolio and credential evaluations at the doctoral level. Since, however, you say that you do not have much desire to take more formal classes but would not mind writing a dissertation, might I suggest a good foreign (which usually means dissertation only) doctorate in public policy/public administration?

You're almost certainly going to have to take some research methodologies courses, going to kind of be necessary if you wish to do a credible dissertation. far as I know, the Euro and overseas unis either expect you'll have the coursework and/or ability and knowledge in this prior to leaping headlong into the research and dissertation phase.

Out of curiosity, what's your masters in? And what law school did you attend? There are two other lawyers here that I know of: me (U of Arizona) and Nosborne48 (U of New Mexico).

    Welcome to the forum, counselor!

I don't know of any legitimate school that will grant a Ph.D based on portfolio assessment.

I have talked to friends and co-workers of mine that are attending Walden University's Ph.D programs and say they are very good about taking transfer credits.

They have a Ph.D in Public Policy with several specializations:
