Does anyone know anything about Ashford University? It seems pretty affordable except that they want to charge me $990 to transfer 90 hours. They call it a matriculation fee, which is waived if my tuition is employer reimbursed, which mine isn't.

I knew that it was acredited; I wanted to know if it is usual to charge that much to transfer my credits. I just don't want to sign up for something that will rip me off. My sister got ripped off at Phoenix University and I don't want to be in the same position. I do know it used to be a college and it was bought by a business to be run as a for profit university. There is something that doesn't seem right.

I visited their headquarters outside of San Diego last year as part of a project I was working on. They explained to me that the charge in question was part of their educational strategy. They wanted people to be committed to the program, and not have people take one or two classes and leave.

Charter Oak State College does the same the same thing with the ole "matriculation fee".

Just another way to get cash from the starving college students, lol!

I am new to this. I am having a hard time sifting through the schools to see which is the best way to go. I want the cheapest legit school I can find, but I don't want to end up with a worthless degree.

If you are that concerned about the value of your degree, consider looking at your home state's public college/university system and the DL or part-time degrees that they offer. Tuition for state residents is bound to be a bargain, and local name recognition could add value to the degree (maybe not accademic value, but whatever).

    Good luck!

I have looked, but only one school in Texas that I have found so far offers a degree online and it is a private school and expensive. I have over two hundred college hours and they said I would have to complete 45 at their school to fullfill their residency requirements.

I hate to be frank, JLS, but if all you found was one online Texas school, you are just not trying.

Here's a link to the University of Texas TeleCampus:
    http://www.telecampus.utsystem.edu/

And here's the number to Argosy University's campus in Dallas, Texas. (800) 954-9900

Getting away from Texas, if you have 200 undergrad credit hours, stop screwing around and contact Thomas Edison State College:
    www.tesc.edu/

Or Charter Oak State College :
    www.cosc.edu

If you have the right number of credits in the appropriate areas of study, you could have a BS by next month.

Go now. Do not pass go, and do not collect $200.00.

Thank you Robb, that is what I was looking for. I will contact the last two colleges you mentioned. As to TU telecampus, I was told that although they offer classes on line they do not offer an online degree. I have never heard of the Dallas school, but will look into it. The only school anyone could tell me about that offered an online degree was the University of the Incarnate Word in S.A. Thanks again for the information.

The following link will take you (or anybody) to the degree programs available through the UTexas Telecampus:

    http://www.telecampus.utsystem.edu/index.cfm/4,0,82,56,html

There are a couple of bachelor's completion programs and a slew of master's programs.

Thanks Robb, none of those degrees will work with my hours which are in Elementary Ed and Interior Design. I have contacted TESc. and they are sending me information. I am also going to contact Charter Oak. I really appreciate your help.

You are so right and I am so thankful. I have been trying for months to figure out how to finish my bachelor's and I think it may have been solved in hours. I don't even know how I ended up on this sight, but I am so thankful I did. I was about to sign up for a degree in a school that was going to make me take redundant classes and drain me financially.

I spoke with an admission person from this school and she said the DL classes were 5 weeks long with "most" testing done online.

With classes 5weeks long and 90 credits coming in, it should only take a year to do the BS/BA..

I am looking for a school that takes the MAX military credits as well as my "newly acquired" AA degree in transfer.
The AA degree is from an RA community college so that is totally a go, but I would REALLY like to have a TOTAL of 90 credits to transfer in(60 for the AA and 30 for the military education..).

    That would be outstanding! :D

The folks here have been helping me with that search too..

    Was that school UOP?

No, it was Ashford. Talk about a scam. They tell me I can finish my bachelor's in 30 hours and the next day they are pushing me to buy books for a Psych class when they haven't even seen my transcripts. I wrote back and told them I already had 18 hours of Psych and didn't need any Psych classes. They wrote me back and told me that their Psych class was special and that I couldn't buy my books from anywhere but from them because they were "custom." I wrote her back and told her that I didn't think that Ashford was the school for me and she wrote me back and told me that I was going to have to pay the $55.00 application fee that was waived on the web site where I applied. I sent her the email she sent me where it said the application fee was waived and she wrote me back and said they were going to bill me $55.00 to make me accountable. I just wonder how many people they bully into signing up for classes or how many people they con $55.00 out of just so they can have information about their school. I am totally amazed that they are accredited and conduct business this way.

All the admission people have their name on their email what was the name of the admission person you spoke with.

The one I spoke with was named Sonya. She was quite nice when we spoke. There was never a mention of money either. I never had the impression of a "hard sell" either. Hummmm

This school was in the running for me, but I'm not into re-taking classes for the sake of making the school money.

The school HAS to be VERY military friendly for me to go.. However I did like what I heard from her.

    Signed,
    Mr. Confusion!
