I recently made inquiry into Upper Iowa University's MPA program. The question was raised regarding my nationally accredited undergrad degree. The following was the result of that inquiry:

    Dear Chuck,

Unfortunately, because Columbia Southern University is accredited by The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (a nationally-recognized accrediting agency) and is not regionally accredited, we would be unable to admit you to the MPA program.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

    Thank you,

I thought I saw on a previous post that UIU would accept NA degrees for admission. Perhaps this is a change in policy.

I think as more RA degrees go online you may find DETC accredited degrees less and less acceptable.

While I cannot speak for Upper Iowa, I too, faced the same issue with a nationally accredited degree. Prior to learning about accreditation, I obtained a bachelors degree from the Kaplan College For Professional Studies. I spent $9,000.00 for the degree and the utility was next to zero. Due to the utility issue, I completed a bachelors degree in six months via testing from Excelsior College for a fraction of the price of the College for Professional Studies degree.

While the nationally accredited degree was completely legitimate; my goal of getting into a grad school of my choice was handicapped by the national accreditation.

In sum, if your goal is getting into a grad school of your choice, you may want to consider Excesior or one of the other assessment colleges to expand your horizons.

    Good luck!

It may not be tops on your list, but Im sure if you tried, you would get accepted to many of the for profit RA colleges. It may be our only option.

That's odd, because I know for a fact that Upper Iowa University has accepted associates degrees in transfer from Ashworth College. Perhaps they will accept an AS but not a BS in transfer? Maybe they have different criteria for admissions into their masters degree programs? I would ask them to clarify this for you.

Southwestern College accepts DETC credits towards a bachelor degree. Perhaps you can transfer credits to this school and quickly finish off another bachelor degree. Southwestern College is regionally accredited (RA).

    Website:
    http://www.chea.org/HETA/default.asp

The Higher Education Transfer Alliance (HETA) is a voluntary group of accredited institutions that are concerned with the importance of student mobility, enhancing success in transfer of credit, and affirming the responsibility and prerogative of individual institutions with respect to acceptance of transfer credits.

Designed by CHEA, the HETA directory can be used by students and the public to find institutions with transfer practices consistent with the four criteria in the CHEA Statement to the Community: Transfer and Public Interest. The directory also provides links to these institutions so that students and others can review a specific institution's transfer policies and practice.

If an Institution is in HETA, What Does This Tell Me?
An institution's membership in HETA tells you that its transfer decisions are not made solely on the basis of the accredited status of a sending institution and that the institution has agreed at least to consider transfer requests from other institutions. Each HETA member institution has an interest in cooperative efforts to assure and enhance student mobility.

    Not Southeastern

That's not true. SEU doesn't accept NA credit in transfer. I'm one of the two evaluators, so I ought to know!

    Thank you Lerner.

It seems there are enough regionally accredited institutions which will accept nationally accredited (DETC) courses in transfer, and presumably associate degrees in transfer, most students should not encounter difficulty in achieving their academic goals.

    Steve thanks for clarification.

The list is from a web link to CSU and I have no way to
    guaranty the list accuracy.

Also things change with times, the list is from 2002.

But the students prior to enrolling in to any college should research and check with the university they want to be transferred to in the future if the credits from the college they are planning to attend would be acceptable.

    By any other name

Others. For example, I really don't see a reason not to accept prospective students' DETC-accredited Associate degrees when they're coming to us to apply for a Bachelor's degree program.

That would simply prevent institutions from openly using NA vs. RA as the primary criterion when deciding on whose credit to accept, right? I'm sure if we had to we could come up with a seemingly different yet functionally similar policy we could do so. (I don't think we should bother, though I expect other institutions will find clever ways of subverting this.)

I know many instances were students with RA associates degrees couldn't get in to RA universities.

There are other qualifiers when applicant is being reviewed for admission in to undergrad or graduate program.

Try to transfer from Cal State LB to National University in LA.
Only classes that have exactly the same duration and content may be considered.

I think the new legislation will be fair but it leaves the Universities that still enjoy academic freedom to make the final decision based on manycreteriia.

it's like employment discrimination laws one cant discriminate minority but still when a person applies for a job the hiring company screens the applicant, checks his background and the hiring manager may not like how the person looks but obviusly if its not for a modeling or entertainment job the person won't know why they were not selected.

I'm for mobility and NA - RA, it will benefit students with achievements and schools with achievements.

Still if one whats to be NARTE certified technologist he will need an ABET Technology accredited Bachelors degree.

In the Specialized, Professional and Occupational world the new legislation may open the door for Professional accrediting bodies to accredit programs at NA institutions.

majority of Professional Accreditors such as ABET, APA, AMA
accredit programs at RA universities only.

this is very serious and important issue that needs to be addressed for the benefit and better future of the students and graduates.

    Re: Re: Not Southeastern

For what it will be worth (IMO not much) I hope that this bill does get signed into law. It still won't force RA institutions from accepting NA degrees as pre-reqs for their graduate programs. Credits are credits, degrees (if I'm not mistaken) are a different story.

After that, good luck getting another bill signed into law that mandates that employers accept NA degrees as equal to RA degrees. It won't happen because the two degree types are different, and not equal. Hell, different RA degrees aren't even equal (I hold a BGS, I should know).

So what makes you think that people (and schools) won't be able to screen out any candidate for whatever reason- (Title IV be damned)?

lets not forget that there is also an issue of professional accreditation.

ABET, APA, AMA, AVA today don't accredit NA education providers.

This may change with the new legislation maybe.
