Was wondering about places where you build a degree. Not talking about TESC or excelsior. I was looking specifically right now at empire state college. They have general concentration ares like a BS in math, science and technology. Then you build a concentration from there.

Has anyone done that type of thing? How do oddly named degrees like that work in the real world?

I graduated from ESC in October 2003. My degree was in Business, Management & Economics with a concentration in Accounting. You work with your advisor to create your degree and then you must defend your rational for the classes you have chosen. The process sounds much more complicated then it is.

I actually just attended an alumni event on Thursday. I was seated with alumn's from 1980 and 1985. The President of the school gave a speech in whivh he said that ESC is one of the best kept secrets for working adults, which is something he would like to change.

It seems like a good school, but the degree titles are just kinda bizzarre. I mean they offer enough classes in math so why can't they just award a BS in applied math as oppose to a BS in math, science and technology with a concentration in applied math.

$181 a semester credit is really good too.

    Empire State College

SUNY Empire State College is on the East Coast and I looked at them before making afinal decision. It was a tough decision. ESC is part of the SUNY system, and they have education sites all over the State of New York, and quite a few in the five boroughs of NYC. I think that if I knew I were not going to be traveling so much I would have chosen that school rather than the DE program I'm now in.

Good school, worth consideration, depends on your needs.:)

you could have still chosen ESC, they have the center for distance learning in which all classes are taken through the SUNY Learning Network. I never saw a teacher or a classmate until graduation.

I almost did choose ESC, and still think it's a good school.

The school I chose is also good, but their dirty laundry gets a public airing such as I've never known at any school. I've learned to think of that as an additional lesson...or entertainment. Honestly, I have no complaints about the choice I made.

The discussion about ESC has made me more curious about the extent of their operations. As mentioned they are all over the place, yet somehow very discreet.
