    Hi All,

I took the DANTES: Management Information Systems exam today.

I was a bit nervous about this exam because it was my first upper level exam but, in hindsight, I didn't think it was overly difficult.

I feel that I probably did alright on it...but you never can tell with DANTES exams until you have the official score report in your hand.

The exam included 89 questions. It took me about 75 minutes to finish (filling in all those obnoxious bubbles! Grrr!).

Here's The Scoop: (for MY version of the exam only)
    ----------------------

    - Know about the SDLC, JAD, RAD, EUC, PROTOTYPING etc.
    - Know about the various System levels (individual, work group, enterprise, interorganizational).
    - Know about BPR.
    - Know what a multiplexor is.
    - Know what fiber optic/optical cable is.
    - Know about ESS, DSS, MIS, KWS, TPS.
    - Know who are considered to be KNOWLEDGE WORKERS.
    - Know what an expert system is.
    - Know a little bit about John von Neumann.
    - Know how many bits in a byte, how many bytes in a kb, etc.
    - Know the various kinds of database (relational, hierarchical etc.)
    - Know what items in an office would be considered characteristic of Office Automation and what wouldn't.

    That should do it!

One question really stumped me....it asked what type of data a social security number is. Integer, Text, Real, or Natural. It seems to me that either of the first three answers could be right depending on what the question writer was trying to get at (I hate DANTES).

I guessed TEXT because this exam was dealing more with databases than with math and, in a database, a social security number would be treated as any other text. Right? I guess if you were going to manipulate the number mathematically then it could be considered either an integer or a real number. Oh well!

I'll let you know how I did in a couple of weeks.

    Best of luck,

I'd say text because a Social Security number has both numerals and hyphens in it.

Just a quick update for anyone who is interested...

I got my results for Management Information Systems in the mail today. I scored a 72.

The results took 16 days to arrive.

I am awaiting my results for Drug & Alcohol Abuse, and Here's to Your Health in the next couple of weeks.

    Take care,

Congratulations! And what about the SS number question? I would say it is an integer since it could be more valuable to operate with than simple text.

    Hi JLV,

It's definitely one of those ambiguous types of question that DANTES often ask. The answer depends on which way you interpret the question.

If a legitimate argument could be made for more than one of the answer options, then I think the question should be changed or removed from the exam entirely.

I'm not complaining though...I passed the exam! :p

But it would be nice to get a definitive answer for those who have yet to sit the exam.

    Take care!
