    Liberty University

    Vs

    Eastern Oregon State

Would like an opinion or two on these two schools/degrees.

I live in Oregon so Eastern Oregon state is Here, however not even close to local since it is on the other side of the state, but I can take all my proctored exams free of charge through their extension campus. The downside I see is they are on the quarter system and not accelerated so it will take me longer to complete my degree.

Liberty University is on the Semester system, but it is also accelerated to 8 week classes. I like that option as I could possibly complete my degree a bit quicker. I also like that it is a christian school and I can take some bible classes.

    Costs are similar.

My concerns with Liberty are that it is a Christian school and frankly it's founder can be controversial. Also I don't see where they offer a course in Not for Profit taxation which I believe is required for the CPA, but they may instead offer it inside one of their other taxation courses.

Eastern Oregon is of course a state school, but it will also take me a bit longer, and will likely have only a few courses in the summer. But having a state school, and one in the state I am in on my resume may be a very good thing.

    Thoughts?

Something to think about is going to EOS and then doubling up on your courses. If its reasonable to take a 15-16 week class shortened to 8 weeks, then unless Liberty is short changing you, then taking two courses simultaneously at EOS should be doable if you could have done the other.

On the other hand, I cannot fathom taking two courses at a time in my current program. Each class is very demanding and often quite HARD! All this from a student who most often took three classes at a time during her undergrad. You should talk to an advisor at EOS that is familiar with the program just to find out how reasonable it would be for you to take two classes at a time.

I could easily take 3 classes at a time at EOS. I know several who do it. The problem however is that most of the accounting classes are sequential. Meaning you must take ACCT I to take II to take Intermediate I to take Intermediate II and so on so forth.

Surely not all the courses are such that you must take all the courses in the degree sequentially (i.e. one at a time.) Just segregate the courses into their respective dependency trees and the start at the root of each and work your way up each tree in parallel. As long as you have two or more trees of relatively the same size you should be in business. Going to a state school in your local area would definitely have a benifit over going to Liberty (as long as you are going to stay put for a while.) Local businesses will recognize and appreciate degrees from local schools. At least more than schools they haven't heard of.

I do agree that local schools look better on resumes, so that is an advantage.

I don't know much about the Bachelor's degrees at Liberty, but my husband is in their MBA program. He really likes the 8 week format so far, and is planning to take two classes this next time around. I don't see where taking two classes at a time would be too taxing, but I'd look at the course outline/ask around first to see if it could be done. He will have taken 9 total hours by the end of the semester.

He had the same reservations about the school at first (i.e. the founder/discrimination against the school), but decided to go with it. He likes the underlying religious tone of the courses (emphasis on ethics).

If you are missing one course to become a CPA, then you could always take it at another University and have it transferred.
