The *MOTHER* of all timebombs goes off in Indonesia

Well, how to ruin your career in two seconds flat. A scathing article on AWU, Senior U etc.

When Indonesia's new leader, President Megawati Soekarnoputri, left on her first overseas trip, she gave her deputy, Vice-President Hamzah Haz, some work to do that included taking charge of preparations for next year's Budget.

It doesn't sound too big an ask of this former investment minister who puts "Dr" in front of his name. Except that the Vice- President's doctorate is a fake, conferred by an American university that does not exist and Indonesian education officials are trying to suppress its operations.

His alma mater, the American World University, has an office in Jakarta's main street, Jalan Sudirman, in a ramshackle low- rise compound nestled between skyscrapers. It shares the premises with several cheap outdoor restaurants as well as the American Institute of Management Studies, the Senior University and the American Global Uni versity all of whose degrees are worth less than a plate of nasi goreng

Amazing... You don't know whether to laugh or cry.

 

Perhaps when Maxine Asher finds Atlantis, she can install Indonesia's vice-president (complete with his AWU Ph.D.) as dictator. Imagine! AWU could then move its main "campus" to Atlantis.

Have the questionable "universities" developed a new promotional strategy? Are they awarding 'honorary degrees' to foreign celebrities who are too eager for compliments, and then turning around and using those "graduates" (without specifying that their degrees weren't earned) in their advertising?

My guess is that the fee and the extremely demanding paper requirement are probably waived for celebrities.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the noted author on African religions, John Mbiti, is sporting a honorary doctorate from Barrington.

 

I think an "honorary doctorate from Barrington" meets the definition of an oxymoron!

(Perhaps we should use the nonexistent term, "dishonorary doctorate"...)
