I was asked to provide proof of English proficiency when I originally registered for USQ. I thought this was slightly amusing as I was born in an English speaking country and am a native speaker of the language. This evidence requirement was dropped upon explaining this to the admissions counselor.

I am now registering in the MBA program at USQ and have again been asked to provide proof of English proficiency. This is not so funny this time, as not only was my claim of English proficiency rejected, but my current status as an enrolled student at USQ does not seem to change their want of English proficiency documentation.

Are others on this board having similar problems when registering for foreign universities?

Being Mexican, I has been required to provide every school I have enrolled (well, I mean every school I have taken courses from) with proof of English proficiency. Every school has accepted a sent simple copy of transcripts from Chemeketa Community College showing that I have taken 9 q.c. (6 s. c.) of English Composition. And when I first get enrolled at Chemeketa, they make me take the SAT as a prerrequisite to take ANY English class. Turns out that it was just OK, as the same score afterwards got me into Math courses that required me to show proficiency in Algebra.

I feel for you in this situation. Unfortunatley, people jump to conclusions when you present with a non-caucasian name. I, on the other hand, have no problems ;-) I suggest you fax USQ a copy of the front end of your passport, verifying your english speaking country of origin and ask that this be placed on your permanent file. A short, terse cover note should also put the administrative staff in place. Remember, most of the staff that do this preliminary paperwork are working from a checklist and do not necessarily think beyond the box.

    Cheers,

    George

PS - Any further problems, e-mail me and I will contact USQ on your behalf.

    Dear George,

There have been problems not only with non-Caucasian names but also with non-Anglo-Saxon Caucasian names, like Eastern Europeans, Russians, Scandinavians, etc., born in English-speaking countries. We are currently dealing with problems or possible problems related to this at www.eslcafe.com .
