I already have an associates degree in environmental studies, but wanted to become a drafter. I thought about getting another associates degree, but someone meantioned penn foster. They seem to have an autocad program for about $1200 bucks to get a diploma in autocad or a standard drafting diploma for about $1000. This doesn't seem like a bad option, but I was wondering if you guys had some insight?

Would you be learning this online? Is the CADD software included in the tuition? It can be very expensive to purchase on your own...

    Penn-Foster

If your gonna take a drafting program from Penn-Foster, take the drafting with autocad program. If your looking to gain employment as a drafter you'll need to know at least one of the major CAD programs. I.E Autodesk, Micorstation, ProE, SolidWorks etc.

Penn-Foster teaches the Autodesk CAD program which seems to be the most widely used program in the industry. (do a search on monster.com for Drafting // CAD and read the job postings)

The drafting with autocad program from Penn-Foster is a self-paced program. It comes with a student additon of the software which in its self runs for a couple hundred bucks.

I mention in the other post that my wife took this course. She's been employed with a fortune 500 company as an electrical drater for the past 5 years.

    entry level salary as draftsmen?

I know that it has been quite some time since you've posted this. How difficult was it for your wife to find employment in the field and what type of pay was entry level? I have an associates in Electro-mechanical engineering but want to become a draftsmen. I am in sales now and want out but I make too much money so making this change has been a difficult decision. If anyone else has some info on this, I would appreciate some info.
