For a graduate degree in English, which is the better known school: National University in California or Southern Cross University in Australia?
Anyone have an opinion on this? I am interested in pursuing a degree in Creative Writing or English for the purpose of college teaching and wondered which would be the better school/program for this purpose. Thanks!
Just my personal opinion, because I don't know much about either school- If the programs are similar to what you're looking for I'd stick with the American University. I figure there would be less "paperwork" involved. I'm actually considering National's Creative Writing program for the future, and if I had a choice between a local or foreign school, I'd always go local, just in case- but that's just me.
Michael, If you're looking to teach college in the U.S., then I would recommend going with the regionally accredited school (National). I'm currently attending National U. (BA Psychology). Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. The basics are: 4 week courses (for the most part), $1044/course (undergrad and grad.), B&M school based in So. Calif. - Tom
I agree that the U.S. school would be better for teaching in a U.S. college, but the SCU degree can be taken by submitting a collection of poetry plus a critical analysis, and I like that format better. SCU participates in the U.S federal loan program, and both schools cost about the same. That's really too expensive for me, but I don't know of any scholarships or grants that I could use.
P. S. South African schools are inexpensive in comparison, but I don't really want to go the traditional research thesis route.
If cost is an issue, check out Fort Hays State University. I'm currently in their Master of Liberal Studies program and emphasizing in English (18 hours). It's completely online and they offer a Creative Writing course... just another option. www.fhsu.edu
