I am starting this thread to show how much support a PhD program at American Military University would get. Like I told those in the know, it takes one history program to break the mold. If you are interested in a program in PhD program in history or military studies, show your approval now. They (APUS) will be looking at these results.
I second airtorn's opinion. I think that APUS has a startegic advantage (compared to other schools with DL offerings) in two areas: 1)History/Military History and 2) Security/Military Studies. I believe that the second option can be shaped into an IR/Policy studies focus. That's what I would like to see. History?? My interest isn't in that specifically, but I wouldn't mind seeing the option there for others do have an interest. I've been a gradstudent at APUS for a little over a year now, and they have a good set-up. I believe that they now offer a thesis option for the MA History program. I'll have to re-check this to be sure, but I believe this is the only program where they have such an option. They do have a variety of courses available in history and related subjects. All they would need (besides regulatory approval) is to develop their process for student dissertations. SO one may postulate that they are getting ready to offer a doctorate level program in that area.
My undergraduate degree is in History, and I was a member of Phi Alpha Theta. I earned my minor in management, which is the track I ultimately went in Public and Business Administraion. I would pursue a graduate track in History if it was available online, and I would pursue it at AMU ONLY if they are 100% Regionally Accredited, which it may happen this time. So let's see what happens.
Would you really do a degree in History after completing your PhD in something else? I have to say that once I'm Dr. Foerster I don't intend to return to that side of the lecturn, unless it's on a piecemeal basis, auditing a course to learn about specific things. -=Steve=-
I think Phd's in different areas might be interesting. I'm sure the choice wouldn't be broad, but relevant to military/civilian employees. APUS is a good outfit! Depending on what the subject, I would at least look and consider what they offer.
Realistically, probably not, but I would at least be intersted in looking at a non-thesis MA in History. I've had enough of long winded dissertation/thesis writing for now. Also it would depend if I could get funding or not.
Fair enough. I thought of another reason to go back, incidentally -- amassing enough postgraduate credit-hours to teach a different subject. -=Steve=-
Security I would tend to favor Security or something similar. Homeland Security degree programs are popping up all over the place, and they will need Program Directors, who have doctoral degrees in the field. In fact, the college where I work would hire a PhD in Homeland Security today, if one existed. Given the increased interest in security over the past five years, job growth in industry, government, and academia should be significant.
I'm in the MA Ancient & Classical History program now, and would follow on into a PHD History progam, if they had one, in a heart beat..
Oh how I wish I could live for my fancies.... I really loved all my classes in history and especially the couple of courses I had in the classics. But, I have a larger (and for my goals, more productive) interest in Computer Science. One of these days I hope to go back to do some additional studying of both classical literature and history. I voted YES on the poll because I want to see DL PhD programs spring up everywhere. The fact that history is a PhD subject I will never pursue does not lessen its importance.
Yes it is true, this is a luxury good I am pursuing as a reward for finishing an MBA and an MSIM degree. Unlike those where I went as fast as I could, I am taking my time and enjoying every minute of the history program. I may also point out that I have been surprised to discover that the tools used to research history may actually be more beneficial in developing critical thinking than much of the computer science curriculum I have completed.. History is, after all, a tradition of telling true compelling stories….
If I could find some venue to finish an MA in History even after washing from California State University Dominguez Hills and American Military University (I am currently lusting after the MAT in History Education at the University of West Alabama and the MLS in History at Fort Hays State University), I would consider the American Military University for their PhD in History, if they would have me after I rebuild myself elsewhere, but I would also have to face the possibility that American Military University doesn't want me and doesn't love me anymore, so I shall also have to dive due consideration to the PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences with concentration in History at the Union Institute and University or perhaps a good dissertation-only doctorate from a university in the UK or some other country that follows their system.
Hi Tireman, History is not my bag, but if they were to offer the PhD in Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, or Strategic Intelligence I would be extremely interested. At least I would be as soon as I complete the dissertation for my PhD in psychology from Capella this year. Tug
History? How about an interdisciplinary doctorate in Military Studies that took advantage of all the various offerings of the college and let you build an individualized program with sysnthesis involved in a doctroal project or dissertation? They talked about long ago before the accredidation - just do a google on "doctor of military studies" and "AMU" and you'll find it. (or search this forum as well) I personnaly would avoid a history major - but would jump at any interdiciplinary LA degree (that let you use GI Bill) Other than that, I'd need a good reason to go to school formally again - still tired from the M Ed.
