Just how accepted are international Doctorate degrees accepted in the US? I was searching through the University of Queensland list of degrees and found a few Doctorate degrees there. Would one of these be accepted as a PhD here in the States?

This is my two cents what what I have observed: There is defintely an overall, slight bias against international degrees in the American academic market. USQ degrees would certainly be "accepted" in the US, especially since USQ would have an equivalent accreditation in Australia. But , two factors come in to play with the acceptance of international degrees, at least in an academic sense.

First, it all depends on the field you are in. In my field (evangelical theology), I have noticed that people tend to like international doctorates. Many evangelical schools (colleges and institutions) in fact hire them, for whatever reason.

Second, which has been mentioned on this board before, it all comes down to your publishing record. You can pretty much have a degree from anywhere (at least an accredited degree), and if you have published well, be able to have a shot at a teaching position.

If you are not wanting to teach, then again, it depends on your field. In which field are you interested?

Hope this helps and others may have a different perspective.

  3. Can we just clarify which university you mean? In your message you say University of Queensland but your link is the University of Southern Queenland. Those are different institutions.

The University of Queensland is one of Australia's best known univerities. It has been University of the Year in the past and recently just about scooped the pool of teaching awards, i believe it was.

The University of Southern Queensland is a newer but totally legitimate institution which has many external students around the world. It has also won awards.

In theory and law all Australian degrees at the same level are equal but there is a tendancy to put more prestige on degrees from the older capital city schools such as the University of Queensland.
