There are certain schools how offer this degree in South Africa. Is this degree equal to a PHD and would it be accepted as a credential for teaching.

    curious

Yes, the Doctor of Letters and Philosophy is considered the equal of a Doctor of Philosophy.

The DLitt et Phil is certainly equivalent to the PhD. I know of some figures within the field of biblical studies who have earned this degree from UNISA. In a couple of cases, they have chosen to resolve some of the potential confusion that might arise surrounding this degree title by referring to themselves as "So and So, DLitt." or "So and So, DPhil." I must admit that I have a real problem with this. I feel strongly that a student should use degree abbreviations consistent with the general practice encouraged by the tradition of the school from which he or she graduated. So, in short, I don't think that a student should work toward gainin a DLitt et Phil credential unless he or she is willing to live with it and wear it with the appropriate pride.
