There are certain schools how offer this degree in South Africa. Is this degree equal to a PHD and would it be accepted as a credential for teaching. curious Robert
Robert - I just asked a similar question recently: http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?threadid=23476&highlight=DLitt+et+Phil I have found other SA universities that offer PhD or DPhil (same thing). DLitt et Phil may or may not be seen as equivalant (rightly or wrongly) sort of like PhD vs EdD in some fields. Its in the eye of the beholder and depends on the field you are in. Good Luck! The DLitt et Phil is certainly equivalent to the PhD. I know of some figures within the field of biblical studies who have earned this degree from UNISA. In a couple of cases, they have chosen to resolve some of the potential confusion that might arise surrounding this degree title by referring to themselves as "So and So, DLitt." or "So and So, DPhil." I must admit that I have a real problem with this. I feel strongly that a student should use degree abbreviations consistent with the general practice encouraged by the tradition of the school from which he or she graduated. So, in short, I don't think that a student should work toward gainin a DLitt et Phil credential unless he or she is willing to live with it and wear it with the appropriate pride.
