I can't find on the PMI website http://www.pmi.org what the requirements are to sit the exam...Does anyone know if you need a certain amount of documented hours in a Project Management capacity or if there are certain educational requirements? I am familiar with the PMBOK and such and I have taken a few project management courses through the Defense Aquisition University http://www.dau.mil. I also work with Project Managers very closely in my job as a Program Finance Support person. This is something I would be interested in studying for eventually. Thanks! Rhonda
Hello, I would post a link, however their site seems to be down at the moment. You should know they just changed the exam, the PMBOK and of course, the related study material. If I remember correctly you need 35 contact hours of PM training (generally live classes), 4500 hours of project management experience over *I think* 36 consecutive months. The number of hours goes up if you apply for the exam without an undergrad degree. As for the application, you must submit a packet to them and then they tell you if you are approved to take the exam. They also do periodic audits. It all sounds a little scary, but it isn't that bad. The exam is 4 hours and I used every minute (I know others who say they only needed 2.5 hours). Be sure to apply as a student for PMI, it is a lot cheaper. As a member the exam is only $405 (or used to be).
Re: Re: PMI Certification Requirements Thanks, Steve. Do you know the requirements to sit the CAPM exam?
Re: Re: Re: PMI Certification Requirements These pages should help. PMP http://www.pmi.org/prod/groups/public/documents/info/pdc_pmp.asp CAPM http://www.pmi.org/prod/groups/public/documents/info/pdc_capm.asp
PMI must be very generous with their 4500 hour PM experience requirement. Where I work almost all of the Business Analysts on our project have their PMP, and their "PM" experience basically consists of emailing out meeting minutes, and filling out Excel spreadsheets.
I hope they are because I currently work as a Cost/ Financial Analyst on multi-million dollar projects and have a lot of insight to the workings of project management!
Rhonda; This is another link that might help. http://www.4pm.com/classes/courses.htm Very informative on Project Management in general, but also includes links to training that can result in graduate credit as well as personal coaching to prepare to sit for the PMP exam. I work as a military PM, and I've just about convinced my boss to pay for this...... Dave
