Hi. Has anyone heard of or studied at Sheffield Hallam University in Sheffield: http://www.shu.ac.uk/

I am interested in their MA in Technical Communication: http://www.shu.ac.uk/schools/cs/ta/html/homepage.htm. Is is totally through distant ed and a three year program...price looks good too... [IMG]

It appears to have the right accreditation, but I have never seen any threads on this particular University so thought I would ask! They are wonderful as far as answering inquiries very quickly which I like! I am in the US.

    Any comments?

    Thanks in advance!

I had a similar experience with them, got a well structured offer, but finally opted for USQ (Online) (Australia).
BTW.: USQOnline has a Master of International Communication. (www.usqonline.com.au).
But this one will almost certainly involve exams, but there are US exam centers.
    Good Luck

The subject index to the 14th ed. of Bears' Guide lists only Sheffield Hallam and Utah State for a distance learning Master's in this field. But there are a couple of dozen more under "Communication" -- some of which may allow this specialization.

John, there is Texas Tech University that offers the MA in Technical Communications: http://english.ttu.edu/tc/DL/

But it is quite expensive for students living outside of Texas.

I have looked into USQOnline and their Communmcations degrees, but really do want the the degree in Technical Communications....With Sheffield Hallam, I will be doing the phone interview this week and wraping it all up so hopefully I will be able to begin in September....just wanted to see if anyone on this NG has studied or went to Sheffield.... Thanks,

Actually Sheffield Hallam... as all the UK Universities, is not accredited. Accreditation is an American concept.

Does that mean SHU is no good then?

British quality control is the responsibility of the government, not private accreditation bodies. The Brits have common, public and stringent academic standards which are enforced via a system of cross-validation and external examiners (i.e. the Universities review each other with respect to compliance with accepted academic standards).

The British attempt to utilize the concept of "common coin"... i.e the quality of education at one school should be the same as any other (Oxford included). Of course that is not the case but homogeneity of excellence is an objective rather than diversity of offerings.

According to the British Council, a course-based graduate degree from the UK is equivalent to a rigorous program from a prestigious American University.

SHU is a British public University (i.e. has a Royal Charter).

To answer your question... yes, it is good!

    Hi,

Sheffield Hallam U. is the former Sheffield Polytechnic with later university status.

It has a good reputation, although I believe its DL MBA was removed from its "accreditation" list by the UK Association of MBA's (AMBA) - although that is in no way an official accrediting body ... more of a marketing tool for those that are in it.

    Cheers,

    Neil Hynd

Some have equated AMBA and AACSB but the organizations are completely different... AACSB is a true accreditation body where AMBA, as you suggest, is more of a marketing club.
