New York State has put a moratorium on the establishment of new programs by for-profit colleges while officials examine perceived abuses and the state’s existing policies to combat them. The step is the latest in a string of actions suggesting that states and other regulators are ratcheting up their scrutiny of, and turning up the heat on, commercial colleges. http://insidehighered.com/news/2006/01/23/ny
I wasn't impressed by the for-profit for which I used to work, nor by most of the others I've seen. I think that most of them exist solely because of the market distortion of Title IV funding. However, neither am I in favor of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, even if Junior is bathing in a swimming pool rather than a bathtub. I'm happy to let them seek out as many students as they like, even if many students wouldn't make the same choice I would. A review of institutional eligibility of Title IV, however, would elicit no complaint from me. -=Steve=-
