    Hi folks

Is it possible to get a degree in social sciences in one of the "Big Three", including psych, sociology and a wholoe pile of appropriate CLEPS. What are the chances of some of those CLEPS clashing with credits earned in a GRE psych exam, how do you plan to avoid these clashes.

    Cheers

    yes it is possible

just go to any of their websites and look at the degrees offered

there are many posts on this site with topics such as psychology, anthropology, sociology

just searching posts over the last 2 months will give you tons of info

as for CEPS clashing with the GRE, the colleges have advisors that will guide you with what courses/exams to take.

that's what your money pays for.

TESC has a major in Social Science & History, but they don't take GRE. For EC and COSC you'd be doing a liberal or individualized studies concentration.

Charter Oak State www.cosc.edu and Thomas Edison State College www.tesc.edu are both listed in Bears' Guide, 15th edition as offering bachelor's degrees in psychology, sociology, and anthropology, though not Excelsior College www.excelsior.edu , though you could check their website, too.

It looks to me like rince is interested in an interdisciplinary major -- right?

its actually not for me. I know that here in Europe it is not possible to get a "social science" degree, you can only get it in specific disciplines, this chap may want to go on and teach and I was wondering if in the US you could take a degree in social sciences which includes a couple of disciplines such as psychology, sociology etc. I have my doubts but I said i would ask.

thanks for all your answers so far.

Oh, okay. If you google "social studies major" you will find that many B&M schools have majors designed for schoolteachers. I guess you could use such a curriculum as the basis of a self-designed major or concentration at one of the big 3.

Washington State University's distance degree program has a social science major but it's not super clep-friendly.

ok, when I think of high school and social studies, I think of history and geography, not psychology and sociology.

I think that in the US if you want to teach HS social studes, you have to have a Masters degree in social studies education. That would be a broad range of history courses and 'theory of education' and 'how to teach' courses. Some HS's will accept a BS in History and allow you to teach while you obtain your Masters in Education.

If you go to Excelsior and major in History, you still have to have a 2nd depth of study in another area, 4 courses. Could be ANYTHING you want. Most people of course choose something that relates to their major. I can't provide a link to Excelsior's requirements becasue you have to get a password to see their stuff anyway. Stupid Excelsior website.

Because your friend wants to teach this, I'm guessing that he has some interest and knowledge of the subject areas. Here are some exams he could take. Thre are many more psych exams, but I only listed those that I thought relate to classrooms and education.

OK. If your friend wants to teach high school social studies, he needs to contact the state department of education in which he wishes to teach for their specific requirements. Foe some states, a bachelor's will suffice, though many states are now requiring a master's. Some states hire social studies teachers, so named, while others hire psychology teachers or sociology teachers or anthropology teachers, etc. When I was going through college in Colorado (1980-1984), a prospective social studies teacher might pick a major within social studies - say, history - and then take the freshman sequences in the other social sciences - anthropology, economics, geography, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and general social sciences - and then also pick up a second major in education with teacher certification.
