Is Brighton University Now Pickering?

According to latest Bear's Guide, Brighton University is closed as of a July 2000 check of their mail service and telephone (page 320). However, I see a lot of similarities in the listing for Pickering U. on page 227. Both used Hawaiian mailbox services, albeit differet ones, both were affiliated with a United Congregational Church, and both claimed "accreditation" from the unrecognized Association of Christian Schools and Colleges. Merely coincidental, or did Brighton fold into a sister school?

 

I don't find any evidence online that they are related.

The Pickering home page today (August 28, 2001) displays only: "Sorry temperately closed!" Perhaps this is related to Hawaii's investigation? (see http://www.degreeinfo.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001172.html for the notice) Additional pages are still online -- see http://www.pickering.edu/right.htm

Robert Keller is listed as the dean of admissions; S.E. Keller is listed as university dean and president.

There's a "Pickering University International" or "Pickering International Institute" (depending on whether you look at the page title or the page content) at http://pickeringint.com/ with links to info in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean. The English link goes to pickering.edu with the "temperately closed" message (no doubt they mean "temporarily" but I can't help wondering what would be different if they had vehemently closed); the others generate a "page not found" error message except for a couple of buttons that link to a couple buttons that link to http://www.pickering-int.com/Jiangti/index.htm (which I couldn't read even if I had the proper font installed; nice picture, which from the file name I'm guessing is of Vancouver).

The content appears to be in Portuguese. It claims to be "in partnership with Brazilian Universities." The domain name is registered to:

I thought the name seemed familiar. Lacrosse's "Welcome from the President" is signed "Colleen Twomey Boyer, Ph.D." It mentions that the (un-named) "chief academic officer ... also founded Columbus University and as a consultant, helped LaSalle University to move in a new, accredited direction."

So, we haven't found a Brighton-Pickering connection, but we've found a Brighton International University-Lacrosse University connection.

According to the 14th edition of my book:

Brighton claims/claimed to be a "Christian university of the United Congregational Church."

Pickering claims/claimed to be a "United Congregational Church Society of Friends Group."

We couldn't go to court with that, but we either have a very rare coincidence or a link.

My recollection is that Boyer had been a consultant to LaSalle, then went to Columbus, then LaCrosse.

Colleen Susan Twomey Boyer is married to Harry Boyer, of whom there appear to be two, junior and senior. Let's not forget the fact that Ms. Boyer was listed in all of American World University's incorporation documents in Louisiana as AWU's registered agent.

All three Boyers have numerous Louisiana incorporations, including some, of course, in the "educational" field.

 

if you check the domain name registration for Pickering, the area code for the phone number is 626. 626 is the area code for Hacienda Heights/Rowland Heights, California and surrounding areas. Looks like a Hawaii mail drop is being used, but Pickering is being run from Southern California
