Some advce please: on a resume, how (or if) should one reference the fact that the school which awarded the degree has literally closed down. Thanks.

Most employers would not even know whether a particular institution is current and mothballed. If worried, you could always provide the date of closure and well as your graduation date.

I wouldn't. I'd just provide the year you graduated, like you would with any other degree. Your resume isn't the place to list potentially controversial information unnecessarily. Address it in the interview if they ask -- and don't if they don't.

I agree that it should not be on the resume, but...

...I'd definitely explain it on the page of references for which one is eventually asked when/if s/he gets past the interview process and is likely to be offered the job if his/her references check out (or is among the finalists). I'd put it right there.

I'd have one section, each, on the reference page, for the different categories of references (personal/friends, work/professional, extra-curricular, client); and I'd have a section regarding verifying my educational/training credentials with all the addresses and phone numbers of the different instituions/places where same may be achieved... and right there, in that section, I'd explain that the school was accredited back when I got the degree, the date I got the degree, the date the school closed and why, and what entity (usually another accredited school) has been entrusted with the closed school's records where my degree may now be verified or from which transcripts may now be obtained.

That's how I'd do it... but that's just me.

    What's the school?

Usually when a school closes it gets absorbed into another institution (i.e. NTU getting absorbed by Walden) and a set of transcripts will come from the new parent institution while explaining the transition. Did this occur with the school in question?

But if a certain degree is needed or will enhance his chances for the position- I believe you list the school on the resume, privided that the school was a legit school at the time he attended. Just my 2 cents.

I didn't make myself clear. I apologize. I didn't mean that the closed school shouldn't be listed on the resume; it most definitely should. I meant that the fact that it's closed shouldn't be on the resume.

The degree from the closed school should most definitely be on the resume; listed, proudly because, after all, it's a legit degree from a legit school that, ohbytheway, just happens to now be closed... the disclosure of which closure should not be on the resume itself. I'm saying that the disclosure that it's closed should be reserved for the reference page/sheet.

    That's all I was saying.
