Anyone have any thoughts on Thomas Edison State College? I am considering this school to finish my BA in English completely online. Other schools under consideration are U of IL @ Springfield, or a BA in Cultural Studies at Empire State College. I have approx. 40 credits to transfer and it's been a long time since I've been in school. I am intimidated. I have a pipe dream of going to law school, but then would be practicing law in my retirement. Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed.
I have also looked at Ellis College of NYIT, but didn't feel comfortable after speaking with an advisor...too much pressure to enroll.

Thomas Edison State College allows you to complete all credit requirements prior to enrolling; you transfer the course credits to Thomas Edison when ready.

If you want to take courses through Thomas Edison then you have the option of enrolling or taking individual courses without enrolling.

What courses have you completed so far? With 40 credits completed to date that leaves 80 credits; perhaps testing out is an option using CLEP, DANTES, or ECE.

I won't be commenting about your BA choices, of which are numerous. Others on this forum will be better qualified to do so.

But I will say this: don't be intimidated by studying online (it's easier than you think, and you'll not regret not having to commute to and from classes), I know two women who have started law studies (online) when in their late 70's and early 80's. They both love it and have no qualms about practicing in retirement. It's better to die with a brain working than to die with dementia due to lack of use.

As for studying law (online for me!) it's the best thing I've ever done. We also have online live chat-based tutorials and they are absolutely invaluable. Also, my tutorial groups online are usually no more than 5 - 10 students, which is a far cry of over 30 students per class on-campus.

Go do it! At the very least you will get plenty of support and encouragement from all of us here at degreeinfo.

    Follow your dream!

Of all of your options for an online BA in English, Charter Oak State College www.cosc.edu , Excelsior College www.excelsior.edu , and Thomas Edison State College www.tesc.edu are probably the most generous with transfer credit and credit for "testing out" procedures (AP, CLEP, DANTES, ECE, PEP, TECEP, etc.). That said, here is a list of online BAs in English.

I would recommend checking out National University's Bachelor of Arts in English program. The Web address is www.nu.edu. The faculty, course management system, and curricula are excellent.

    Re: National University

    Hi,

I would second Witt's recommendation of National University. As a student at NU, I have found the courses to be quite through and fairly rigorous. I have experienced some issues such as an incorrect textbook listing that cost me extra $$, also NU just upgraded Blackboard and that was quite painful while they worked out the kinks. All in all though, I would highly recommend the school. NU is an RA school, located in California. They have numerous online programs (including a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing). The school is a bit on the expensive side however ($1044/course).

    Good luck!

    - Tom
