A few of my colleagues have attended the FBI National Academy and the Southern Police Institute. Both are highly regarded in the field of law enforcement training for current and future police executives. Does anyone know of any university or government organization that may offer similar training/certification via DL?

Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety offers its 10-week School of Police Staff and Command program online. $2925.00

The University of Louisville, which operates the Southern Police Institute, has its justice administration master's program available online.

Columbus State University has the GA Chief's Command College, which is offered in 40 classroom/3 semster hour blocks, on-site. The entire program lasts 2-years and leads to a MPA in Justice Administration. It is not dl, but it is designed to allow police officials to attend school without interrupting their work. Each course begins on Monday morning and finishes on Friday.

Sorry Manny00; I misread the Northwestern course description. The online in the description refers only to the method of registration.

While looking through the Bruce's list of schools, I found the Univerisity of Alaska Fairbanks which offers a Masters in CJ Management and Administration. There is a one week residency at the end, however. It is also regionally accredited. I am impressed with the course selection and like the fact that you have a two or three year option in completing the program. Here's the link:

Does anyone have the link to the FBI National Academy (for police executives) that shows their curriculum?

The F.B.I. National Academy provides undergraduate and graduate college courses that are awarded from the University of Virginia.

The courses are from the following disciplines: Law, Behavioral Science, Forensic Science, Leadership Development, Communication, and Health/Fitness.

    See link: http://www.fbi.gov/hq/td/academy/academy.htm

I am a graduate of the 190th session.

Thanks c.novick, for the link. What was your opinion of the experience? One of my long range career goals is to attend.

JH50 - If you have the opportunity to attend the FBI National Academy, I highly recommend it. It is an amazing experience.

The course work is exactly the same as a college/university course. You have intense exams and term papers due. I participated in courses such as: Legal Issues for Command Level Officers, Law Enforcement Leadership and Command, Internal Affairs given by the U.S. Justice Department, Mass Media and Public Relations, Forensic Science and more. All college level and credits awarded by the University of Virginia. The library at the academy is the most comprehensive library available for all law enforcement.

The physical program is excellent and demanding. The week before graduation there is a 9-mile run called the Yellow Brick Road, which is one of the training runs and obstacle courses used by the U.S. Marines at the base.

You have the opportunity to network with law enforcement executives from the FBI, US Secret Service, DEA, LAPD across the entire U.S. of police agencies to NYPD. Additionally you are classmates with executives from other countries like England, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Mexico, Canada, Jordan, Latvia and so many more. No distance program could ever compare.

Best wishes for success in your career and if I can provide any further information let me know.

I attended the http://www.cailaw.org/ilea/ police school of supervision. But they also have an executive college for the brass. It was a month long but very well worth it.

    A 9 mile run????

When I take a look at all the senior police executives, there is nary a one that could go 2 miles, let alone 9????

  14. Tell them there's a paid-up "Hospitality Suite" at the end of the run. Better yet, tell them there's a performance bonus waiting for them. They'd finish the last two miles dragging their entrails with THAT motivation.

Just tell 'em that the local chapter union steward wants a word....you'll never see a chief of police move so quickly.:D

Edited to add....for those who don't know. He will be moving AWAY from the steward/lawyer/rep/whatever.;)

    Yes it is 9 miles.

3 miles to the course - the course (3miles) and 3 miles back. You build up to it in the 11 weeks prior to the run. Most of the class did it. It was fun.

There are many senior police execs that can run much further than 2 miles, trust me.

If you want to attend the FBI National Academy you have to be in very good condition. There is a weight limitation and an excellent physical fitness program there. It is a serious requirement and enforced prior to acceptance.

Interesting trivia.....the FBI National Academy was started by J. Edgar Hoover as a way to develop loyalty among local law enforcement to the FBI. Hoover couldn't stand people like LAPD Chief Bill Parker, whose contempt for the FBI was legendary.

That tradition continued when LAPD Chief Daryl Gates refused to sign a MOA during the 1984 Olympics, ceding all authority to the FBI in case of a terrorist attack.

I recently found www.policetraining.com which list many training classes for police executives along with numerous courses in other LE related topics.. Many however require class attendance.
