    Hi All,

New to the boards and wanted to say hi. You all provide a wealth of info to newbies such as myself.

Im looking to start an online MBA, and have my sights set on California State University DM. Since my undergraduate degree is not in the field of Business, I must show competency in the following nine areas before begining the program:

    Financial Accounting
    Marketing
    Business Law
    Economics
    Management
    Operations Research
    Finance
    Information Systems
    Business Statistics

    Two Questions:

    1) Can I take CLEP classes in order to fulfill these prereqities? Do I need to take nine CLEP's, or is four-five enough? I ask this because I know that the University offers five online bridge classes that cover all nine subjects (at $700 per class). Generally, how does CSU measure one's competency for the various prerequisite courses?

    2) Assuming the University accepts CLEP courses (cant find any info on their website), will they provide an ample foundation for the rest of my MBA at CSU? I know many people use CLEP's to "pass-out of" BA level courses? Are they recommeded for MBA students as well?

Anyway, thanks in advance for all the help youve already provided me with. Happy new year :)

Native - This is not my area so please excuse me if I'm wrong (I don't think I am). After making a brief visit to the CSUDH website I've found the following
    http://mbaonline.csudh.edu/admission.asp
I didn't see any of what you've stated except that those subjects areas might be what comprises the GMAT. I don't think that you'd need to CLEP out of all those different areas. There's probably a Foundations course you could take that would cover all of it. Hopefully others will tell us if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the quick response, Jack. Im referring to the section entitles "Prereqisite Requirement", which I copied below.

    http://mbaonline.csudh.edu/programs.asp#PREREQ

Prerequisite coursework covers nine business core competency areas that provide the necessary background for advanced graduate study.

Students who hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than business administration or a related area will be required to demonstrate competency in the business core areas. Competency can be demonstrated by completing necessary coursework at an accredited institution prior to beginning graduate studies at CSUDH or by completing appropriate bridge courses offered through the MBA Online Program.

Four bridge courses are offered by CSUDH - see http://mbaonline.csudh.edu/scheduleb.asp

Depending on your age and experience you might be able to get a waiver for some of these prerequisites. I did for my MSQA (but then that a different department).

OK, I understand. To my mind it comes down to a matter of stylist preference. I'd prefer to take the courses because the sructure makes it easier for me. Clearly, others prefer to go the CLEP route. That's OK and I'd suggest that they take a lond hard look at Lawrie Miller's site

In any caser, best of luck in your quest.

Thanks, Ian. How do I go about receiving a waiver for certain prequisites?

I just went in and talked to the department head.

For a distant learner it might be more complicated - my suggestion is write a letter requesting a waiver explaining how you meet the prerequisite and attach it to your application.

In my case a prequisite was 3 units of computer science. I explained that I had been using computers since the 60s using Fortran and Basic to solve engineering problems and the department head waived the requirement on my application/acceptance form.
