Please forgive the long post which follows, but I want to present the situation clearly.

I hope someone can help with the problem I am facing. I have a B.S. (Sociology) from The Univ. of Maryland and an M.Ed. (Higher Education) from Penn State. I have taught English, English composition, sociology, film studies and speech communication for over twenty years at the college/university level. My main duties have always been in composition. I have worked at two European universities and seven U.S. institutions. I accompanied my wife to Florida on a job transfer from Germany. Florida institutions adhere strictly to requiring a degree (or at least eighteen semester hours of graduate credit) in the field one teaches in. Although I have worked at major research institutions, I am limited in Florida by my lack of a graduate degree in English and/or sociology. As one administrator here said, “You may be Picasso, but if you don’t have the degree or hours you can’t teach art.”

Can anyone recommend a distance degree in English or Sociology? My searches have turned up degrees in humanities and liberal arts. Institutions offering “correspondence” graduate-level courses will not provide a transcript showing graduate credit UNLESS the student is enrolled in their graduate program, i.e. the regular, on-campus enrollment as a grad student.

Thanks for any help in locating a graduate distance program in English or sociology and/or information on methods of earning graduate distance credits in these fields.
