    Hi all -

    Hope for some help here!

Anyone with experience with Walden, specifically their Ph.D. in Higher Education OR just general feedback from those in other degree areas. . .

    Is it "worth" the cost?

Secondly, how beneficial, or not, have you found the residencies?

Third, how many of our courses from your master's program did you earn credit for in the doctoral program?

Lastly, how many hours a week do you spend on each term and how many classes do you take at a time?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm looking at Walden too and have received responses from current students similar to this: "I really think the program is very solid, comprehensive and so far worth the time and $."

As you can see, the above response is great, but I am always interested in hearing more from current/past Walden students as well as hearing from the forum's thoughts on Walden.

My wife is completing her graduate degree in education from Walden. I am not sure she would like me to say how much time she spends a week...3 or 4 hours tops. She says she has learned a lot and gives it favorable marks.

    Thanks, Jimmy. . .

Before posting, I did search for Walden and have reviewed this discussion; I'm glad to see it was a positive one!

I'm most interested in learning more about transfer credits, classes per term, and time spent on these each quarter.

    Thanks in advance!

    Allison :)

I'm in a similiar situation as you - and looking for similiar information. I've been accepted to Walden PhD in Education and am supposed to begin in March.

As for cost, I'm not sure. My masters at Teachers College, Columbia University was $530 a credit 8 years ago. Now the tuition is $930 a credit. And I doubt my teaching salary could support that! And I think I priced that next to Walden, and Walden was 1/2 the cost?

Walden hooked me up with a few people who are already in the program I am interested in. They seemed like an intelligent group. I was impressed. And I could see myself studying and sharing ideas with them. I'm sure if you ask, Walden will do the same for you - although, it will only be people who have had a positive experience.

So again, is anyone out there a PhD student at Walden who can offer feedback?

    Time needed at Walden

With the required video viewing, reading assignments, discussion participation, and written responses, it should take more than 3-4 hours per week and certainly does for most students. In addition to the described activities, some of the work is done "on the job" in the classroom where the teachers in the program must demonstrate they are applying their learning. In addition, students must submit a portfolio at the end of the program. They should work on this throughout the program. The portfolio requirements are quite extensive, IMO, and this requires some video taping of classroom teaching. (This is assuming we are talking about the online MS in Education degree).

I suspect that the low number of study hours is a direct result of an instructor who gives out grades without taking the time to read and effectively assess all the work completed each week. There are those instructors in every online program and every traditional program. My graduate students put in 12-15 hours a week in the MSED programs and they say that's pretty much the standard.

I am presently a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology at Walden. I spend 10-15 hours at least a week in my classes. I barely have time after work to do stuff, but I somehow fit it all in.

I am almost starting my third year, and have had very tough teachers, who have all been doctors in the field of psychology.

Residencies--well, I have only been to one, and it was okay. I cannot say it was the greatest, but at the same time, it was not completely horrible either. The best part of it was networking with everyone, and meeting new friends that I still have to this day.

I take 2 courses at a time...I was taking like 3, with the residency, but that was only a week thing, it was a C-4. The bigger residencies take two weeks.

It is definitely worth the money, or at least it has seemed to be so far for me, in my studies.

    Hope this helps.

I am currently at Walden. I am working on a PhD in Public Health, Epidemology. It is great and well worth the money. In spring I start my last PhD class and start on my dissertation. This school is absolutely committed to being a school of excellence. The residencies are the best part of the program. It gives you a chance to interact with other students and faculty. You get to network and find faculty for your dissertation committe. I have been more than impressed with this school. The time or two that I had a concern, the staff addressed my concerns immediately and solved the problem. The faculty chair took time to call me personally and help me with a problem in one of my first classess.
