I think so. People in China have no idea that to open an university is as easy as to rent a mail box. Since almost all universites in China are public ones, people have no idea that a foreign university may be just a print shop.

    Cleverland? I like it!

I don't have the software to properly display that page, nor could I read the Chinese characters if I did.

But UC Berkeley is obviously real, so I guess they are listing the U. of Berkley. The U. of San Diego and the U. of Pittsburgh are real, as is Pittsburg State in Kansas. There is a fully accredited Oakland University in Michigan, of all places. There's an RA Austin College in TX.

So are phony "universities" trying to impersonate legitimate universities in China? Perhaps the legal departments at the real Berkeley, Oakland, Austin, San Diego and Pittsburgh would be interested in this.

I think that's the way they want to mislead people. When somebody says that "I graduated from Berkeley", your first impression usually is that it is UC Berkeley, right?

Jonathan writes, "People in China have no idea that to open an university is as easy as to rent a mail box. Since almost all universites in China are public ones, people have no idea that a foreign university may be just a print shop."

A 1999 article (Chronicle, I think) reports that more than 500 fake universities have been identified in China, and there even kiosks outside real university campuses selling fake and counterfeit diplomas.

That's even more distressing than discovering, a couple of weeks ago, that there is a Starbucks right in the middle of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

I think the current situation may be even worse. Nowadays, there are a lot of news in China talking about fake and counterfeit diploma holders. People are used to buy counterfeit diplomas of real Chinese universities. But now, as the electronic verifying systems are put in use and real diplomas are recorded in the system, it is easy to identify the bad guys. So people switch to foreign fake universities, which are hard to verify if the HR people know nothing about foreign education systems.

I was also asked to sign a fake dipolma because I "know how to sign a foreign signature". I was shocked and disappointed. Now, I understand. The whole education system in China is corrupt as it is in Korea. All you need to do is bribe your teacher and you can get anything you want. Furthermore, cheating is common place in China. My students all thought I was lying when I said that I never cheated. In Korea, all of the answers to the test can be found written on my students' desks. My Chinese wife confirms that this is also common place in China too.

If I were an employer, I would be suspicious of any Chinese or Korean's credentials. No, I am not racist. I just don't trust the education system in Asia since I have been a part of it for several years and have experienced the corruption first hand.

It depends. I still think that the academic standard and quality of national universities, such as Peking University, Tsing Hua University etc., are good. I know some graduated from those national universities and they are brilliant. Some have been admitted to top US graduate schools.
