Athabasca University offers some courses, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, which have no examinations at all. Each course indicates the evaluation method applicable to that course.

For example, CMNS 321 uses written assignments as the sole means of student evaluation.

The course you mention states that a final examination is required as part of the student evaluation. However, there is a challenge for credit option which might provide an alternate means of evaluation if the course coordinator/professor deems it appropriate.

In some cases Athabasca requires proctored exams. I cannot speak for the specific course you are looking at.

When I was taking the UoL exams the woman at the local University (that was my testing centre) told me that the largest volume of students writing proctored exams were taking Athabasca exams (apparently there were a lot). So my guess, and it's just a guess, would be that if they say a proctored exam is required then a proctored exam is required.

I have taken 3 courses at Athabasca and they all required proctors. AFAIK all of their exams must be proctored.
