    Okay guys,

After much deliberation, searching online, pondering and talking to schools, I have decided to take the eCornell Certificate of Studies in Proactive Leadership and a Certificate of Completion in some type of Management…which will tie my MBA and BSCJ together…hopefully. Anyhow, given the following three programs, which would you go for? Two considerations:

1.) Time and money do matter. Time more so than money to an extent.
2.) I would like the prestige of a well known school on my resume…who wouldn’t right?

I’ve decided to go this route rather than get a second B.S. Thus far Gregg DesElms has been awesome advising me and I find his advice, as that of this board to be informative and right more often than not.

Which of the following programs are most likely to catch the eye of an HR person going through a stack of resumes?

    http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/prospective_students/undergraduate/lse/dip_grad/management/index.shtml

Cost: About $1600 + books, test fees, etc. College credit given. Cannot begin until after completion of undergrad, they won’t make an exception. Completion time...1 year.

    or

    http://www.universityalliance.com/university/tulane/

ACE recommended for 2 Graduate Hrs. per cert…total of 6 or of 9 undergrad hours. May begin at any time. Will be about $5000 with all paid expenses…estimated time of completion is 6 months.
    or

    http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/wc/BusinessManagementCertificate_CourseList.shtml

20 Credit hours…10 classes, around $5,000 plus books, etc….and that’s if I don’t use the Online cohort method….otherwise it jumps to about $8,000.

You might want to add http://www.royalroads.ca/programs/faculties-schools-centres/faculty-social-applied-sciences/leadership-studies/malt/Royal Roads University to the short-list of schools under consideration.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Executive Management
    with a specialization in Leadership.

    The
Master of Arts (MA) in Leadership and Training.

Note the tuition fees are in Canadian Dollars so the United States Dollar real cost will be about 25% - 45% lower depending on the prevailing currency exchange rate.

Royal Roads University used to be restricted to military personnel, prior to downsizing of the military in Canada, but has opened up admissions to the public.

thanks sentinal...but I've chosen to get an MBA (Quality Leadership) from St. Josephs College of Maine. The certificates purpose is two fold:

1.) Gives me a little business background before tackling an MBA.
2.) Provides me with a "management" credential in my education.

and I'm sneaking a 3rd in here: 3.) Gives me some MBA knowledge that a traditional MBA is required to know, which St. Joe's MBA is not that traditional....plus, if I choose the right school it'll catch SOMEONE's eye.:D

Thus I'm not looking for a degree more of an undergrad/grad cert.

If you can afford it, I don't think you can go wrong with Penn State.

    TCord...thanks.

Do you think Penn State has more name recognition than Tulane or UofL?

Penn State was my least favorite option....but, after careful review still looked acceptable....but 10 classes will take a while....

    still listening.

I'm partial because I may decide to pursue it myself, but I would choose the Tulane Certificate. I think HR departments, especially mine, might question a certificate earned overseas if one is living in the US. I'm sure I am wrong, but that's just how I feel! :)

Maybe this is my East Coast bias, but yes.

    Rhonda....

That was my primary fear about getting a UofL diploma...that the first question would be "so when were you in England?" and my reply would be the whole "well you can go over the internet" then you get that .....'oh...one of those guys' looks.

As for the East Coast Bias...being that I am in Texas...I'm not sure if Tulane or Penn State is more known...but probably Penn State because of the athletic programs....

but in Louisiana....Tulane is where the smart kids go.:D

Have you consider Stanford's SCPM certificate? They also include an elective in leadership for strategic execution. Don't know if this is close to what you have in mind.

That is interesting...two problems and a question though.

1.) It costs about $14,000.00. A bit much.
2.) It doesn't appear to be an "online" type program though they do offer some of the courses online....but maybe you can do it.

My question is....isn't "project management" different than a cert in management?

    friendorfoe,

I do think Penn State has the edge as far as prestige, here in the United States. You may be opening yourself up for the whole "oh, you earned in ONLINE" thing if you go with the UofL, although I understand they have great programs. I don't know much about the Tulane programs, but in my opinion you'll get a lot of mileage out of a Penn State credential, no matter where in the U.S. you might find yourself.

The other thing I like about the Penn State certificate is that you are earning honest-to-goodness credits which can be used to transfer into a masters degree program, if you should so desire. I'm not sure about Tulane or UofL, but I know that can't be said about some certificate programs.

Thanks TCord...you get credit with UofL and Tulane as well....otherwise I wouldn't consider them seriously.
