I plan to enroll in Excelsior's Jan. Math class, any information concerning whether to take the Web based online course or the CD ROM course, how hard, assignments, exams and if they were proctered, grading etc. any help would be appreciated. I need 3 hours of math to recieve my Bach. degree . I scored 45 on the CLEP exam 9/05 without studying so my backup plan is to study quite a bit and take the CLEP exam 3/06. Any info will be appreciated.
What Math course are you referring to? I am currently taking 'College Math'. It is a 16 week course with a quiz each week and a midterm and final. The quizzes are online and untimed. The tests are online also but timed. The course is pretty easy and go-at-your-own-pace. I am taking the WebCT version... Rhonda
Thanks for your reply, the course I am considering is College Math also. They wouldnt give me the syllabus without enrolling does it state the value of the assignments and the mid and final exams in relation to your grade and thanks again.
Yes, I believe the quizzes equal to 50% of your grade. There are 14 quizzes, all multiple choice, open book and untimed. The Midterm and Final are both worth 25% of your final grade. Taken from the course syllabus: "This course is set up to be largely self-directed. You will study from your textbook, you will take online quizzes and exams, and you will contact me for questions and further explanations. There are no “classes” to attend. There are benefits to this, such as flexibility and working at your own pace. However, self-directed learning can leave students feeling alone or confused. One last note, if the phrase “math anxiety” sounds like you, I’d like to know about it. This is how I will help you. When you are stuck on something, tell me how far you got before you got stuck, and what you think is the problem." Hope that helps! Rhonda
Aren't Excelsior courses $760 ??? Excelsior is way too expensive for any course you can do through testing My advice ... buy this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471530123/qid=1134681068/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/102-0113523-9954524?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 then ... watch these videos for free http://www.learner.org/resources/series66.html#program_descriptions just register (for free) and then click on the little VoD icon next to the titlle or buy these videos http://www.sdlearn.com/product_p/001040103.htm or these videos http://www.teach12.com/store/course.asp?id=101&d=High+School+Level%26%238212%3BAlgebra+I&pc=Science%20and%20Mathematics if you're going to do the course by CD, you might as well learn from these videos and take the CLEP or DANTES and spend a lot less you could even take this exam for $330 and still come out spending less http://www.ohiou.edu/independent/desc_sht/math113cce.htm or if you really need an instructor take this course for $369 http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/description.cfm?subject=75&course=MATH110College%2520Algebrapversion or this course for $325 http://www.uidaho.edu/isi/courses/math108.htm just my opinion
I second James' opinion. Cheaper faster better. You got close with the CLEP - you only need a little targeted study to get what you need done. Prep right, test smart! Did you use the Princeton Review CLEP book? If you didn't, that section may be all you need to study! (Then mock-sit the CLEP sample exams to be sure.) I did that and got various areas of weakness covered in titles like Basic Math. Just avoid textbooks (too lengthy) and make sure it covers what you need work in. For example, "Basic Math and Pre-Algebra (Cliffs Quick Review)" has only two pages on number series, making that otherwise top-rated book useless for the sub-area. Go for it!
