I've received lots of good info in another thread here not long ago which brought me to strongly considering UNISA as a possibility for my DEd. I'm just wondering if there is anyone out in this vast wasteland who has had direct experience dealing with the university and/or with taking this degree online. I'd love to hear some first-hand experiences!!

Also, recently my provincial government in Canada turned down a program for approval even though it had the DETC stamp (Cl. Coast. U.)..... UNISA also has DETC approval - does this mean this is unlikely to be approved as well..... is there anything wrong with the DETC's standards?

I can't wait to hear any feedback about UNISA....

Thanks and keep the chatter up!!:D

Hi Donnie - Our fellow member roysavia is currently enrolled in a PhD program (Sociology) at UNISA. You can do a search on his posts and pm him if you like. He hasn't posted recently, I think he's quite busy with all his various activities. Good luck.

Well, UniSA was good enough for Nobel Prize winner Archbiship Desmond Tutu and former South African President Nelson Mandela, so you're in good company if you happen to become a UniSA graduate!

As for the DETC accreditation: There are employers/colleges here in the U.S. which won't accept a degree from a DETC-accredited school. There are others that will. It is up to them to determine if the accreditation is up to THEIR standards. Apparently, it does not meet the requirements of the Crown. Remember, regional accreditation is the gold standard here in the States. DETC is a national accreditor.

I am currently studying with a DETC-accredited school and so far, it is MORE difficult than the B&M regionally accredited college I attended. I'm having a heck of a time with the business math, but that's a story for another thread.

I not certain, but I believe UNISA's DETC accreditation applies only to its undergraduate programs, while its doctorates fall under South Africa's national standards.
