Forward: I am searching for a doctorate for personal reasons. Not/not interested in NCU/TUI, South Africa for different reasons (already did my tour in Africa, have no desire to go back). I am currently stationed in the Balkans for two years. Plans will have me in SE Asia for 3 years beginning in 2009. No real possibility of visiting a campus on scheduled meetings as my assignments are dynamic on a daily basis.

I have searched these forums ad nauseum. These searches yielded the following questions:

First Question: One thread mentioned the possibility of a university in the Balkan area (cited Sofia) offering a distance doctorate. Anyone have more specifics?

Second Group of Questions: I find myself attracted to EdD's as my particular passion touches education and diplomacy and EdD's, on first blush, appear to offer a level of fluidity. Open to any international university that is accredited. (Either RA, Royal Charter, or other). Not looking for DETC only or non-RA. So, anyone know of an EdD that might fit the bill? Or what are your thoughts on me being able to convince a university to "waive" annual visits?

Oh, I did attempt to buy Bear's Guide before EOD here - wasn't at the store and pouching a book here would be silly.

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome Tristan. I might have a part of what you've asked about. First, in regards to Sofia, I believe the program specified was a Doctoral program in Philosophy and so may not be attractive to you. I have no memory of an EdD program at Sofia, in fact, I don't think they use that nomenclature in that part of the world, do they? In any case, if you've been to the Sofia website and haven't found it then I'd say it probably doesn't exist. There's not a whole lot of discussion of these sorts of schools because most forum members are looking for a program where the language of instruction is English. I'd suggest that you look in the Netherlands as it is reported that they commonly use English as a language of instruction (or, at least, they allow English to be one of the languages for a Doctoral dissertation) but if you're unable to travel at all then this wouldn't be much help, would it? As for SE Asia, some of the schools in those countries have DL programs but they are available only to people who are living in that specific country or to citizens of that country living elsewhere. So, with that in mind, we'd need to know specifically where you will be living before any further suggestions might be made. Also, issues of language will continue to prevail so if you have any non-English languages it would be helpful if you listed them.

Bears Guide has long had a section on the research doctorates offered by more and more Australian universities -- and I assume the new edition, out in 3 or 4 weeks, will, too.

They include Cowan, Sturt, Southern Queensland, Monash, and Melbourne, among others.

Feedback from readers suggests that the residency aspect is variable and discussable, and ranges from none at all to a few short visits to 'you pay the air fare and the faculty member comes to you.'

Rather than not answer your question - or try to sell you something - I'll at least try to answer your question ;)

    General list

In particular the "New Bulgarian University" has a DL PhD program - I'd be interested in what you find out. Slavic schools can be bad at answering e-mail.

    Thanks very much Jim!

A lot of information to dig up. Hopefully if things slow down a bit, I'll try to get out to New Bulgaria University to check it out. I'm not too keen on the PhD in Philosophy, but it will give me an excuse to see the area.

On a side note, I've been exploring some of the Aussie programs, such as Univ. of New England's EdD which touts itself as one that is almost "interdisciplinary".

Anyone know of any other "interdisciplinary" doctorate programs (such as Edith Cowan and UNE) that can be completed online? Or programs that tend to be highly "flexible" to summer session attendance due to gov't career (such as UMUC is military friendly)?
