online Geography degree?

My husband wants to earn a BA in Geography, but none of the local colleges offer that as a major. I have had a great experience thus far with Charter Oak (graduating next month!) and so I think a DL degree would be a good option for him.

His requirement is that the school must be RA and have an actual Geography program. We haven't been able to find anything thus far and thought I would ask if anyone else knows of a school that fits this description. Thanks!

Try copying-and-pasting the following text string into the Google search box:
    • +geography +certificate OR diploma OR degree +"distance learning" OR "distance education" OR online site:.edu
Don't try typing it. Copy-and-paste it, so that spacing, punctuation, capitalization, etc. are exactly as you see, above. You'll get a lot of chaff mixed-in with the wheat, so you'll have to be patient about going through page after page of links; but if there's a geography degree there, you'll find it.

This web site might be a good place to at least get started. I don't know about that institution's bachelors degree in geography, but its masters in geography is distance learning; and it's got all kinds of "so, what can I do with a degree in geography" articles and such.

I also happen to remember that Birbeck University in London has several distance learning geography and geographic information science programs at the certificate, bachelors and masters levels. More...

If Geographic Information Science (GIS) would qualify, you could modify the aforementioned Google search text string to:
    • +geography OR "geographic information science" +certificate OR diploma OR degree +"distance learning" OR "distance education" OR online site:.edu
And, again, don't type it. Copy-and-paste it.

If GIS will do, then you'll probably find even more programs since it is now a more common specialization within the world of geography, generally.

If you find anything that interests you, be sure to check the CHEA database to make sure the school and/or its geography program is accredited.

Hope that at least gets you started! Good luck.

Thanks for the search tips. We looked through everything last night and can't find what we're looking for. We found a lot of graduate degrees and certs, plus some degrees that are partially online, but nothing for BA that is 100% online. Southern Oregon University looked promising but not all the necessary classes are offered online. It looks at this point like he'll have to go for liberal arts, humanities, or something like that and just take a lot of geography courses.

Don't give up yet! Here is what I found. Hopefully, one of these programs will meet your Husband's needs.

Florida State University - Interdisciplinary Social Science (Concentration in Geography):
    http://online.fsu.edu/student/degree/plan/roadmap/undergr/iss.html

    Excelsior College - Geography Major:
    http://www.excelsior.edu

I've been searching for additional programs, however Geography is not a popular undergrad major via DL. I found a ton of graduate programs in Geography.

If you need additional Geography courses, check out BYU. They offer a number of online Geography courses (http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/select.cfm?type=univ&subject=55)

You may want to expand your search to foreign schools. Perhaps a UK degree would be acceptable.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendations, Tom. We saw the FSU program and they only allow geography as a secondary concentration, not primary. The Excelsior degree is the only one at this point that meets the criteria.

I'm not sure right now how much of the program he plans to test out of and how much he plans to finish through online courses. Cost is also a factor so we'll have to analyze our options w/Exelsior (as far as - is it cheaper to test, take classes, take classes elsewhere and transfer, etc).
