Amberton University lists an instructor with a Nova Ed.D.; Olivet Nazarene University lists a couple of profs; so does Webster University -- http://www.amberton.edu/faculty.htm http://education.olivet.edu/facultystaff.htm http://www.websterkc.org/faculty.htm
No, as you can learn from their website: "Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a not-for-profit, fully accredited, coeducational institution." from http://www.nova.edu/cwis/urp/description.html

Who can tell? This depends on so many things. There are a *lot* of applicants for most academic jobs.

The school is the largest private school in Florida with many residential programs. Tee short-residency doctorates, like most DL related doctorates, are a god-send to the working adult.

Degrees are accredited and earned. You will work hard but in the end you will have something to show for it.

    A biased NSU grad,

As a Nova grad (DBA 1996), I'm partial to the school. There are some critics, however, as there are critics of most DL programs. I suspect that NSU has received some criticism in part due to its size - NSU turns out lots of EdD's (400+ per year). As for getting a job - one's academic degree is part of the equation - but only part. What other credentials do you have? Are you looking to move into a new type of work? Or are you looking to grow in your present job?

Kristin is correct in pointing out the competition for academic jobs. Except in narrow fields, like IT and Business, there are typically lots of applicants.

    Thanks - Andy

According to US News it has a very low "prestige" ranking. I possible I would aim higher.

    Hi Waldo,

You haven't changed. Your opinion of Nova is always the same no matter what face you are wearing.

Many public school administrators throughout North America have earned their Ed.D.s through Nova. In public education it seems very well accepted.
NSU seems to be a school that poeple really love or really hate.

Of course, it could be said that it is US News and World Report that is lacking in prestige (not to mention insight into alternative higher education).

But then again, they're just expressing their judgment, not violating the TOS.

Thank you Waldo for this deep insight. NSU is indeed a credible university, providing doctoral (as well as other levels) level instruction for the mid-career adult. I served on a committee with the principal of one of our county's high schools, who had a Nova Ed.D. Very sharp guy, who was doing an excellent job in the local school system. Is Nova Harvard? No! But neither is UCLA or CUNY, however, I wouldn't lose any sleep over what the Ivy Leaguers were thinking.

This may be somewhat off topic, but I am curious. How do you perform the above search on Google? Every time I try to search for "nova southeastern faculty," it keeps giving me NSU web pages. How do I find out what other schools Nova alumni teach at?

One way to do a search like this is to phrase your query in terms of what you expect to find instead of what you are looking for. In place of Nova Southeastern faculty try using "phd nova southeastern university" including the quotes.

You have quotation marks for the search so that only relevant info will be displayed. You also have to search for PhD, Ph.D., DBA, D.B.A., EdD, and Ed.D. because people tend to write these degrees differently. To obtain info on Nova doctoral gradutes in the academia and elsewhere do separate google search for the the following:

    "PhD, Nova"

    "Pd.D., Nova"

    "DBA, Nova"

    "D.B.A., Nova"

    "EdD, Nova"

    "Ed.D., Nova"

Thanks for the replies. Those searching techniques made a world of difference.

I was interested to see how many and at what schools Nova alumni are teaching. I am finishing up a BA at TESC and I am seriously considering embarking on the MS/PhD Computer Science program at Nova. Of course, if I go the PhD route, I would certainly like to use it in a teaching position.

    Thanks again for the help.

I am a proud Nova Southeastern University (Knight) graduate, (Master of Public Administration ’98).

Presently, I am an administrator for a very large governmental agency. My educational experience at Nova was superb. The professors were very corporative and the curriculum was very challenging. Some of my classmates are either City Managers or Directors of their respective government agency. The school in itself has a very good reputation in the State of Florida and is the largest private university in the State with over 18,000 students. In addition, I am looking forward to starting my Doctoral of Public Administration in the summer of 2002.

Most people in this board believe that Nova is just a Distance Learning College/University that just offers their classes on the Net, which is untrue. Nova has numerous reputable residential programs, such as their Medical and Law Schools. I finished my program at their Campus. Nova’s campus looks very much like any other major campus of a leading college/university.

If anyone is interested in finding out about Nova Southeastern University’s programs and a get grand tour of their campus without having to travel, you may want to call them at 1800-672-7223 which is their admission office, and order their CDROM. The CDROM will provide you with all the information you need about Nova, including a grand tour of their campus, so that you can make a concise decision that is best for your needs. Do not listen to the non-substantial argument that Nova is not a school of worth. This is not Harvard or Yale; however, Nova will provide you with the best education available.

    Good Luck
    Tom.

Ike, I hope you don't think Waldo is me... just another very perceptive and realistic individual.

So are you still the President of the Nova Southeastern Academics Anonymous therapy group..
"My name is Ike and I have a Phd from Nova"
"Yes Ike, we know, and we love you"

    1. A Nova degree not highly respected
    2. They are for profit and expensive
    3. I wouldn't depend on a Nova doctorate to get me a job but if you have a strong background the degree is obviously an asset and will meet requirements for a RA doctorate.

What is the source of your contempt for Nova?
