I would like to attend some of Kaplan Collegs' online classes and use them for my Excelsior Degree. Has anyone heard good or bad things about Kaplan? Or has anyone attended? All info and opinions will be helpful. ------------------ Chris Elliott Certified Administrative Assistant
Last time I checked, Kaplan College was accredited by the DETC. Also, last time I checked, Excelsior did not accept credits from DETC-accredited schools. (There might be an exception for courses from DETC-accredited schools that also have been evaluated by the American Council on Education). Before you sink your hard-earned tuition money into any school in order to satisfy Excelsior's degree requirements, be sure you've checked with Excelsior to ensure not only the school's adequacy, but also that the particular course(s) you're contemplating will indeed fulfill your degree requirements. Even if the school is acceptable, the courses you're considering may not be. How to do this? Enroll with Excelsior, then ask. That is what you're paying them for. Rich Douglas
Kaplan College appears to be accredited by the North Central Association, a regional accreditor. As such, I wouldn't anticipate any problem in transfering their credits to Excelsior. Any problems would probably revolve around whether the classes you took at Kaplan actually meet Excelsior curriculum requirements. But you will meet that problem with any transfer credits, and I don't think that Kaplan College itself will be a problem. But if you are concerned about what Excelsior will accept, you probably should be talking to Excelsior. Unfortunately I have no personal experience with Kaplan and can't give you any information about their classes. if you are concerned, you probably should verify my opinion with Excelsior. http://www.kaplancollege.com/info/units/kaplancollege/unit.asp?GUID=09EDC7E398EF40F3A598A938791D26D7911971059568671932
I knew I should've checked. Kaplan is listed on DETC's website, but I didn't check if they were RA, too. Bill and I agree that the real challenge is in ensuring the particular courses you choose meet your degree requirements. Excelsior is the arbiter for that. Rich Douglas
The various Kaplan ventures can be confusing. Kaplan began as a provider of test preparation services and has expanded into online test prep & guidance products, after-school educational centers, the Kaplan Colleges, publishing and more. Kaplan itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. Kaplan Colleges include: *Concord School of Law -- distance learning, DETC-accredited *Kaplan College -- distance learning and an Iowa campus; accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Kaplan College (formerly AIC) was purchased by Quest Education Corporation in November 1998, and in 2000 Quest Education was purchased by Kaplan, Inc. *College for Professional Studies -- distance learning, DETC-accredited ------------------ Kristin Evenson Hirst DistanceLearn.About.com
About the Kaplan College, here is a little bit of the history. 1. A while ago, when Kaplan Inc. bought the paralegal school in Florida, the school was renamed Kaplan College, and that Kaplan College keeps the original schools' DETC accreditation. 2. Then, Kaplan Inc. bought Quest College (accredited by NCA), and renamed Quest College to become the new Kaplan College, and renamed the "Kaplan College" in section 1 to become College for Professional Studies. Therefore, the current Kaplan College is accredited by NCA. But the "Kaplan College" existed before Kaplan Inc. bought Quest College is accredited by DETC. I hope that NCA will eventually accredit all Kaplan Colleges, including Concord Law School. Then we will see the first ever regionally accredited online law school. ------------------ Jonathan Liu http://www.geocities.com/liu_jonathan/distance.html
Don't forget Concord Law Center, offering Master of Laws degrees in Taxation and Health Law. This endeavor does not appear to be accredited by anybody yet. nosborne, formerly joybaum
They are regionally accredited and the lady I spoke to was very helpful and informative. 18008178272.
Ok, now im a little confused. Maybe someone can clarify for me. If someone were to get a B.S in Criminal Justice from Kaplan's "College of Professional Studies", would they be a graduate of "Kaplan College"? or a graduate from the "College of Professional Studies"? Any info will be greatly appreciated. FC
You would be a graduate of the DETC-accredited College of Professional Studies. The RA Kaplan College does offer a B.S. in Management with a concentration in Justice Administration, but no pure CJ degree other than the A.A.S. which is a vocational degree. Bruce
