Hello everyone! I came upon Degreeinfo while researching various online colleges, and I want to first say, "thank you" for all the wonderful information that I have found here.

I offer cyber tea and cookies in hopes of getting some questions answered, mostly concerning Empire State College.

I finished my AA in Social Science at a B&M community college this past May. I originally planned to continue on to a local UC campus, but I have young children, and I can afford day care or college, but not both at the same time.

I was wondering if anyone here has finished a history degree through Empire or another college.

If yes, did you continue on to grad work at a B&M school (UC quality or better), and were there any glitches in getting your work accepted? I am aware that Empire is RA, but I am wondering if there is a snobbishness with the brick and mortar institutions about DL degrees, or a degree is a degree is a degree. I am also a bit concerned since while getting business or computer related degrees seems to be more common place, I'm not so sure about the social sciences (aside from psychology).

I am interested in Empire's degree in "historical studies". The list of classes available looks quite good, and I can put together a plan that looks quite similar to that of my local public university. When applying for graduate school though, would the fact that the degree says "historical studies" be looked at leerily? What about the lack of a major/minor? Does anyone in admission stay up at night tossing and turning over these dilemnas, or am I over thinking this?

Thank you for reading this post, any and all information well be most welcome and appreciated. If anyone has done the program at Empire, I have more questions about their Exploring Place and Histiography classes. They sound really good!

    Welcome, MotherJones!

Just a helpful hint: Whenever you inquire about a given institution, try to include a link to its web site so that those who would like to help you don't have to go Google it just to find it; and also to ensure that the web site of the institution about which you're inquiring is, in fact, the one that everyone else here sees.

For the benefit of the reader, you're talking about this program, I believe.

As to your snobbishness question: A degree is a degree is a degree... as long as it's RA. You'll have no problems.

 Blushing madly here! Yes, that is the program I am looking at. Thank you so much for posting the link.

Thank you also for the welcome, you folks have done a great job here! I actually read the articles in your signature. They are very informative.

For a 100-year-old gal, you sound spry and lively.

At the Bachelor's level, it is generally the school itself that people look at, and, as Gregg says, if RA that's almost always good enough.

At the Master's level, people look also at the courses taken, while at the Doctoral level they also look at the individuals who taught them.

    As in:
"I did my BA in history at Empire State because it's an RA school with a major in my field. Then I went to the U of Nebraska for my Master's because of their concentration in the history of the Roman Legions. And then I went to the University of Oregon for my Ph.D. so I could study with Professor Ramfratzel, author of the 32-volume History of the Roman Legions."

    MotherJones,

In case you need some programs to compare Empire with, here are three other schools, all brick and mortar, that have standard B.A. in History programs online:

    Judson College, AL

    Link

    Caldwell College, AL

    Link

    University of Illinois at Springfield

    Link

Troy State Montgomery offers a B.S. in History that focusses on the Civil Rights Movement

    Link

Saint Mary of the Woods in Indiana also has an online program in history, but it is less convenient because it requires periodic campus visits.
