    Hello all

I am strongly considering the CSUDH Master of Arts in the Humanities External Degree (HUX). I would appreciate hearing from current HUX students or alumni who would be willing to share their experiences including pitfalls, opportunities, general advice, etc.

Also, does anyone know what the perception of the program is as it pertains to acceptance to a PhD program?

    HUX

    Hi!

First of all, this has been gone over before, for example here. Another place where you can get some insight on the HUX program is at the HUX students Yahoo Group, which is here.

I've heard that it's a good program, and I think there are people who post here who have gone from a HUX MA to a doctorate.

    Peace,

    Matt

I completed the HUX, MA from CSU, with emphasis in music and was accepted at Boston University's Doctorate in Music Ed (online) with no problem. I even got a full time teaching position at an area university because I finished the HUX program. It was a great boost for me. I enjoyed the HUX program and highly recommend it. Keep track of deadlines, talk to the office personal - they're quite helpful. I had one professor, who has since retired, that was a witch, but all the others were great. Very affordable too (especially consdiering what I'm paying at BU!) As mentioned - the Yahoo group is a wonderful resource.

As I've mentioned before, when my wife completed that MA and was then accepted by doctoral programs in philosophy at Harvard, Princeton, Pittsburgh, and Vanderbilt, they all suggested that they were willing to consider the MA work, but wouldn't guarantee that. At Vanderbilt, where she went, they said they'd wait one year and see how she did -- how well trained she was, in effect -- before giving credit. She was, and they did.

Here's an old thread in which several of us hux veterans commented on the program for another prospective student.

There have been lots of hux threads on Degreeinfo over the years. Unfortunately, with the search function so deathly ill, most of them are inextricably lost in the sands of time. But here's a few archaeological relics:

I think that it depends. (Doesn't everything?)

In my own case, I once toyed with the idea of earning a Ph.D. I live in the SF bay area but I'm not really the kind of ambitious young academic careerist that Stanford and Berkeley prefer.

California Institute of Integral Studies is more up my line (albeit a bit too trendy for my taste these days) and I happen to know a faculty member there. So I ran the idea past him. His completely unofficial opinion was that they would probably be glad to accept me, but that I would probably have to do a second MA with them. CIIS has no problem at all with CSUDH or with DL (they offer a little themselves). The potential problem was that most of my hux coursework didn't correspond all that closely to my proposed doctoral program. They might want a more discipline-specific background.

(Actually my case was a little more complicated than that, since I have about 15 graduate major units from another university as well. So this gentleman couldn't really say for sure what CIIS would do. I'd have to apply and see.)

That's just one man's unofficial opinion at one school. I wouldn't want to generalize it too broadly. But I do think that if you are anticipating going on to a doctoral program, and if you want that program to accept your CSUDH credits and not make you start over again at the just-earned-a-bachelor's-degree level, you probably need to read the doctoral program's admissions policies carefully to determine precisely what they want. Then figure out whether the hux program will provide it.

    question for Dr. Bear

    Dr. Bear,
If your wife was accepted into the philosophy programs at those various schools, and if the HUX program is RA accredited, why did they have to wait and see how your wife performed in order to accept those MA credits? Thanks for clarifying.
