Enrolled at NCU

I reenrolled at Northcentral University in their DBA in criminal justice administration for the following reasons:
    • They gave me a law enforcement scholarship that gives about 40% off the tuition, without which, I could not afford to attend. This is a financial once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I cannot let slip by. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. ;)
    • They are not requiring me to take statistics again (I had undergraduate & graduate statistics elsewhere).
    • It is regionally accredited.
    Other ancilliary reasons include:
    • It is self-paced, so the coursework can be expedited or can be slowed down (extensions are granted).
    • They offer a DBA in criminal justice administration, which is geared towards fully employed working professionals, as opposed to those who are seeking tenure as a PhD at a major research university (not my cup of tea).
    • It is online. I would not mind a residency, if they had one, but they don't.
I am enjoying it so far. :)

    Best wishes. :)

Times change. People change. Things change.

The important thing is that NCU is RA. ;)

Just out of curiosity, what do you plan on doing with a DBA with a criminal justice emphasis?

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Welcome and good Luck.

I'm writing my proposal right now, and believe me the RSH courses will be very challenging but worth it.

    • Help run a police agency at the staff level.
    • Teach DL courses on a part-time basis.
    • Use it to win a political office in the future. It's certainly not an overwhelming factor that would help one win a political office, but it is a small piece of the puzzle amongst many pieces. It's all about presenting an image.
    • Opportunity.
    • Lastly but probably the most important: personal enrichment motivated by a non-stop desire that can't be buried. Once I actually get a doctorate, then the monkey can finally be removed from off my back and buried and laid to rest.
This is almost like a SWOT analysis.

    Hi Me Again

It is quite a striking change from your former opinion. In any event good luck and I hope it brings you what you are seeking.

Yes, you are right and some of my previous postings were less than wonderful:
    • < begins shaking baby rattlers to make noise >
Unless I win the lotto (and I don't gamble, so it's not going to happen), this will be my only financial opportunity to obtain a RA doctoral degree and I cannot look a gift horse (NCU's law enforcement scholarship) in the mouth. All of those other online RA doctoral programs are wonderful, but they are simply way too expensive for a man of my means, to include Capella, Saybrook, Argosy, Walden and all the rest. I anticipate that if NCU is successful, then their prices will eventually be commensurate with what everyone else is charging.

I originally got an Associates degree from Los Angeles Valley College, which was considered a bottom-of-the-barrel school. However, in retrospect, the utility of the degree was fine because it was RA. I anticipate that a RA doctoral degree will also suit my educational and professional goals. If I were seeking tenure at Harvard as a professor, then of course the degree would not suffice. But I'm simply an ordinary working Joe who is reaching out for something that was previously beyond my financial reach.

My brother is a professor at a major research university, so I've heard all the stories about educational snobism. It is a reality!!! The university that you graduated from does make a difference when you are seeking a position as a professor at those elite schools!!! But I'm just an ordinary Joe... a beat cop... who is reaching out for the unusual: an online RA doctorate. I will never have the opportunity to attend cocktail parties with the ultra rich and with the educational snobs at our elite American universities, but I have no desire to either. I would be quite content to teach real skills to the working class at a community college where I can have a bigger impact in the lives of people. :)

Will I make it through the dissertation stage at NCU??? I will certainly try and they'll have to drag me out of there kicking and screaming!!! A dissertation is sort of like eating an elephant: You can't do it in one sitting. It takes many many meals and it's one bite at a time. LOL ;)

As a school principal, my aunt tried to dismiss the notion that a dissertation is hard and that was the analogy that she used to drive home her point.

I may just post that over my desk. I'm determined to finish my dissertation in a year, but I've encountered some naysayers. I looked at your program's website. I like how NCU tries to help make the dissertation manageable. It looks like a nice program. Good luck, MA.

Are you enrolled in a doctoral program or are you looking for one?

I looked at the syllabuses for NCU's dissertation and it pretty much spells everything out. It seems to break everything down into managable projects. I also learned that the candidate is not allowed to begin his research until he gets approval from his dissertation committee; I didn't know that!!! I was going to go ahead and start doing some research, but now I will wait. I am still doing coursework.

Good luck to you! Our former police chief recently retired and ran for mayor. He won with over 75% of the vote. He has a Masters in PA and was very popular in the community.

I want to go back and get my Masters. I just have to figure out what I want to do.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

You mean that after your unremitting attacks leading to your discontinuing NCU's program because it was too easy you are currently attending their doctoral program? I am flabbergasted! Well, not really. I believe that you have made a very good decision.

For the purposes you indicated a doctorate from this school will most probably serve your needs and future career goals quite well. Is this a perfect choice? Let's face it NO online university is nearly perfect and probably much more expensive than NCU when considering their exorbitant tuition and residency costs. Best of luck in your pursuit of this degree. Simon

I wish you the best Me Again on your NCU experience, I am now 74% through my program. I am enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration- Criminal Justice Administration program. I would say that I have enjoyed most of the classes.
