APUS Emergency and Disaster Management: MPH, MPA, MS or MA?!?

I’m taking the first few classes at APUS and have been considering a concentration in Emergency and Disaster Management. I noticed at APUS they have several different programs. There’s the MPH with this concentration, an MPA with this concentration, an MS in Environmental Policy and Management with this concentration, and finally an MA in Emergency and Disaster Management. Can anyone tell me the difference!??

My background for the last 10 years is teaching ESL in Asia. Before that, I was an environmental lab tech and in the military. I want to return to the USA next summer and I’m interested in the teaching side of Emergency Management. Can someone please give me some input as to all these different degrees with Emergency Management? It seems like overkill. Thanks!

While I can not answer your exact question, I will say that maybe you should look at their sister school (AMU) American Military University. There you can have a disaster / emergency management concentration for a Masters dregee in Homeland Security.

Just some more to think about.

That program and concentration option is the same for APU as well. They are the same programs/concentration for APU and AMU. The Name difference is due to with a strategic policy on their part. (Not saying it was the best strategy, just saying...)

    Jim,

If I were you, I would print out all of the possible APUS programs with the EM concentration, put them side by side, and see which set of courses fits what you want.

Are you looking at adjuncting on the side?? What will you be looking for (new job wise) if the adjunct gig just isn't happening for you?

No, actually I'm not very interested in being an adjunct at this point. I'm interested in the education end or the management end of Emergency and Disaster Management.

    Jim,

    Try here:

Keep in mind that to adjunct at most schools you will need the RA degree and 18 graduate hours in the subject. Both of which are fulfilled by the MS at Jacksonville State.

    Good luck with your decision,

    Kevin
