    Hi All,

I came across the British American University Alliance on the web and took a look at the accreditation section. This leads to a few web sites that contain listings of universities (together with web addresses). There are two points here that people might like to discuss:

    1. Is this a genuine organisation? If this organisation is not geniune, imagine the work that has gone into establishing the accreditation web sites!

    2. Irrespective of the last point, isn't a database of 5000 - 8000 web addresses for universities a useful resource in itself?

    BTW the URL is: http://www.internationaldegrees.com/intdegrees.htm

    Any comments on this?

Thanks - I'll look these up.

  4. You're referring to the "United Nations Convivium for International Education which maintains the largest data base of degree-granting institutions in the world." Well, there are a few problems with this.

The UNCIE list is not complete. For example, the Alabama link goes to a page with just these lines:

    Universities
    Colleges
    Community Colleges
    University of Alabama System

and none of these is a link. See http://gradschool.about.com/library/usacolleges/blusalabama.htm for a rather more complete list of Alabama schools, with links.

The UNCIE list is neither reliable nor accurate. A search for "Capella" (as in Capella University) turns up nothing.

Try a search for "Dakota" -- you'll find links to several rather dubious entities, but not to the entirely legit and long-established Huron University, Presentation College and Mount Marty College. Lest you think these too small to be listed, let us note that the UNCIE list includes the Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation -- legitimate, but perhaps of limited interest to an international audience.

The UNCIE list for South Dakota includes the dubious "Adam Smith University" and "Rushmore University" (but not for "Trinity College & University" -- could this indicate a rivalry?) -- as well as "Aaron University" in Watertown. The "Aaron University" link leads nowhere, and aaronuniversity.com is not currently a registered domain name. However, darton.org is registered to an Anthony Zyler, Aaron University, Watertown SD. "Darton University" appeared on the web within the first few days of January 2001 (eliciting Chip's comment on alt.education.distance: "My guess is that Mr. Zyler will be darton for cover before too long" -- a prophetic comment, as darton.org disappeared from the web days after it was discussed in the newsgroup.)

I found this error posted on their website interesting:

"We award two kinds of Bachelors Degree: a BSc and an MSc."

Can be found in their Bachelor degree designation link.
