It's about time. They were one of the schools in my dissertation research projects. Their name did poorly, significantly less than their accreditation type. Still, I'm not sure this is a step up. Earning a degree, even a vo-tech associate's degree, from some place that calls itself a "career school" still seems limiting.

I think the name change would be more effective if they were to change their name to Penn Foster College.

    School Name

Rich is correct. The "Career school" name will be limiting. EdDirect should have done more research or at least looked at this board. Sincerely, Nikolas Horthy

From one horrible name to another....UGH!

I wonder if the name change applies to all diploma and degree programs, I assume it will. Currently, when ED Direct confers an associate degree it lists the school name as Center for Degree Studies, not Ed Direct. Diploma's lists Thomson Education Direct. At least, that is what's shown on their sample degrees/diplomas.

I prefer they stay with the Education Direct or Center for Degree Studies than Penn Foster Career School.

This is all very confusing. They once went by the name International Correspondence Schools (ICS) with the added name of Center for Degree Studies. They later around 2001 or somewhere around there changed the name to Harcourt Learning Direct. Then they later changed it around 2002, to Thomson Education Direct, and sometimes it just states Education Direct. When they issue a degree it states Center for Degree Studies and that you graduated. I don't think that the degree is very impressive looking, but all this name stuff makes it confusing. They mentioned that the company Thomson will continue to own the school, but that they wanted to have the name reflect back to the founder of the school. So, they added Penn to reflect there presence in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and to add Foster, which is the name of the founder which they took the last name from to come up with the name Penn Foster Career School. I think that this is somewhat better than the name Thomson Education Direct, but they need to make a correction and stick with the name instead of changing it so much. Otherwise, it makes it seem like there is no distinction or reputation that is being established.

I wish the person that is currently enrolled at Education Direct would give some opinion on this as well. What do you guys that are currently enrolled at the school think of this name change?

At last month's Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education, they considered an application for a license from Penn Foster College, in Scottsdale, AZ. Wonder what's going on here?

(Just to introduce a new and ineresting name here, the Board also had an application from RainStar University, http://www.rainstaruniversity.com/, which does residential alternative medicine stuff).

    William Penn and Steven Foster,
and is glad to see them honored
    together. "Way Down Upon the

I'm currently trying to find out whether the new diplomas are still going to have the name Center for Degree Studies or if they will reflect the new name of Penn Foster Career School. I'll need to call and when I find out I'll let you know. In my opinion, they should do away with the name Center for Degree Studies and just have the name of whatever the school is suppose to be. Otherwise, it seems very confusing.

Is Penn Foster like John Galt? Does Penn grin like mcoleman?

I see nothing anywhere about this name change, folks.

Will students that graduated from the school previously to the name change -- can they use the new name of the school or do they have to go by the old school name? I know that schools change names from time to time, but when someone goes to check on a degree and verify that it was issued it wouldn't have the old name available anymore, but the new name. Has anyone gone through a school name change and when it happened did you get a new diploma with the new name change and reflect this on your resume, etc? Just wondering because this is all new to me.

I am alone. I see people but they see me not. I speak but none hear. I need therapy. Or to get drunk. Yeah, that's it.

Don't underestimate the reader, my friend... at least not this one. I read, and got, every of your words... and shared your thoughts. Your first impulse about all this was mine, too.

But the pennfoster.com is, indeed, owned by Thomson Learning. And if you hack the URL given in the thread-starting post so that "info." is gone from it, you'll get a redirection page which will then take you to Education Direct... or so it is, at least, at this writing (or was last night, when I tried it, at any rate).

So at least we know the site linked-to in the thread-starting post, is legit. But it's surprising that there are no press releases or other notices about it on the Education Direct web site... or, if there are, I missed them.

To the thread-starter: How did you come by this? Are you involved with Education Direct? Did you get an email from them or something? Did you just stumble onto the Penn Foster site and, if so, are you just making assumptions about precisely what's going on and/or going to happen? What's the background on this?

potpourri, I think that when the name change is done in December you can call and order a new diploma with the new name.

I talked with someone this afternoon. The degrees themselves they're not sure whether they will continue to use the name Center for Degree Studies or if it will be changed to Penn Foster. The representative that I spoke with mentioned the name Penn Foster College if you were enrolled in the degree program so maybe that will be reflective for the degree programs and for the diploma program the name will be Penn Foster Career School. So that seems to be what someone had previously stated they wanted. I'll have to call after December 19th to find out whether the name is going to be reflected on the new diplomas or if it will continue with Center for Degree Studies. If anyone else finds out before hand please let us know. At this point the only person who might have the answer to this is the Director of Education -- Connie Dempsey.
