Is the Heriot-Watt DBA well regarded in the US? I am not really interested in teaching. I am more interested in consulting with a top consulting firm.

How do you think this DBA will be regarded? Is it on par with most university DBAs in the US?

    Thanks for any info.

I didn't even know they offered a DBA!

Your question begs another question, which is, "Does a DBA really give a person a leg up with the consulting firms?"

Perhaps I'll post that in the Off-topic section.

    Thank you Rich!

So it would be comparable to a Nova or Argosy DBA? Would someone be able to get a teaching job in the U.S. if they wanted?

The DBA program from Heriot-Watt is still fairly new, I don't think there have even been any DBA graduates yet.

Heriot-Watt as a school is well regarded in general, at least in the UK. When I run into people from the UK and tell them I went to Heriot-Watt, they seemed to be impressed. In the US, not many people have heard of it.

There is one member here, can't remember his name, that already had a PhD from Capella, but liked the Heriot-Watt DBA so much that he enrolled in that as well. The professors who teach at EBS have all taught/is teaching at other top schools such as Stanford, LBS, INSEAD, to name a few. He is also an executive for Panasonic USA. He hasn't been around here lately, probably too busy with school work!

As good as the program seems to be, I don't know if it is the best way to get into a top US consulting firm. All my consulting friends tell me that these companies mainly hire from the same groups of schools, Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, and a few others. It's more who you know than what you know. A DL program, no matter how good, will work against you, unless you are interested in starting your own consultancy.

As for teaching, the DBA would help, but most schools want you to have 18 graduate credits in a single subject. So you might need to take additional courses somewhere else.

Better. Yes, but with the limitations normally seen by someone attempting to enter academia through a nontraditional route. (The school isn't nontraditional, but you won't have the advantages of U.S. students who, by definition, are already in the pipeline.)

I can't imagine wanting to teach as a career after going through such an arduous and expensive process.

Good point, the EBS DBA isn't cheap. If you are in North Miami, you are probably much better off going part-time to a local state school, like FAU or Nova.

Rich, what about a PhD or D. Litt from schools like the University of Kent at Carterbury or Glasgow University? What's your opinion on entering US academia with a distance doctorate (assuming that it is possible to complete one) from these schools? Any advantage over Herriot-Watt?

    Thanks.

Are the modules for the EBS DBA more expensive than the MBA modules? BTW, how did you like the MBA program? How long did it take to finish? How many modules did you take at once?

The MBA itself from Heriot-Watt looks like an interesting program. My employer is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, so I might have some luck having this degree fully valued. Do you have any thoughts or experiences as to the utility of the Heriot-Watt MBA in the US?

I suspect the same advantages and limitations exist. I don't know the relative prestige of the schools you mention, but that might also enter into it. Finally, you'd have to look at the programs in question and decide if they're more or less likely to lead you to your goal.

The MBA and DBA course modules are the same price, but when you get into the research phase, I heard you pay a yearly fee. I couldn't find it on the website, but I remember thinking it was steep. I guess that is incentive for you not to waste time!

I loved the EBS program. I was working full-time when I started and was only doing 1 module at a time. Then I quit my job and finished on campus in Edinburgh.

As for utility, with any MBA, utility you get out of it is the value added to your work experience. I was working in HR. Since getting the MBA, I've gotten several offers to work in HR, but I didn't want to do that anymore and became a student again.

UF allowed me to transfer 30 credits from the EBS MBA to my PhD program. That alone gave me a great ROI. If your employer is in Newcastle upon Tyne, I think it would be a great degree for you. I often run into professors from the UK here at UF, and when they learn I got my MBA from Heriot-Watt, are most impressed.

Don't do it while in your MSCS program! Too much work! Wait till after!

    Good evening!

If I recall correctly, Boca Raton is less than an hour from North Miami, so perhaps the short-residency program at Lynn University would be a possibility. The PhD in Global Leadership with a specialization in Corporate and Organizational Management might be of interest, and information can be found at http://www.lynn.edu/index.php?submenu=programsBusinessManagement&src=gendocs&link=CBM-PhD&category=College%20of%20Business%20%26%20Management and http://www.lynn.edu/clientuploads/LynnPM/PDF/Graduate-Phd-GlobalLeadership.pdf on the web.
